Help me choose 1&1 or WebFusion!

(Following on from my older thread about sharepoint).

Just about to setup some hosting, sharepoint servers and domains. Narrowed it down to using either 1&1 or WebFusion. Nothing in it price wise £15 per month, webfusion offers unlimited users on sharepoint, 1&1 50 max (not a issue at the start). Both have similar webspace and hosting services for domains too.

Grateful to hear peoples opinions and experience with these companies, I've not used either before, don't want to be changing hosts regularly, want a good one and stick with them!

I've been using 1&1 for years without any problems. Couldn't tell you how good they are when things go wrong (thankfully and touching lots of wood). Couldn't tell you how they compare with WebFusion.

seems wildly expensive, you could ask MSE member seaweasel for a hosting quote, I've been using his reseller service for over a year, Moneysaving & happy.
  • Hi.

I've just created my first website and went with hostmonster after reading a lot of good reviews.

You get unlimited space, bandwidth and domains.

If you google "hostmonster coupons" you can find a link for hosting at $4.95/m (for 24months) or $5.95/m (for 12 months), i went with the latter. You do have to pay upfront, but included in that price is a free .com domain registration and whois protection.

I've certainly found them ok so far and their 24hr online chat support is great. Hope this helps, it may be an company you've overlooked.

1and1 sent me a bill a few months ago. Only problem was it was for hosting starting August 2005! They have a reputation for automatically renewing dead accounts and charging you. I've told them to get lost.

Here's one thread on 1and1's sharp business practices.

If you do a Google then you'll find many similar stories.

Thanks for the tips so far! 1&1 and Webfusion seem to offer the best price/features for sharepoint.

    Keep 'em coming!

Do you really think that is expensive? For hosting a sharepoint server/service + domains? I can't find anything more competitive from the "big names" than £15/month, based on a virtual server. A real dedicated server you'd be looking and lots, lots more.

If anyone else knows better, really be keen to know, I need this service running next week, so advice and recommendations appreciated!

I've not looked into this I must admit, but £180 a year inc domains, for a 50-user (for sake of argument) server running sharepoint - doesn't sound expensive to me.
If you ran that in house - it'd probably cost you more than that in fees just to get it setup in the first place, assuming you already had the hardware and network in place to do so. And if it ever goes wrong - if 1&1 are doing it, it's one less thing YOU have to worry about.

I have hosting through 1&1 (have had for just under 2 years) although I buy it through a friend who has a dedicated server with them. To my knowledge, I've never had any problems.
If you do have problems though - they have a 24/7 support phone line. If your business is relying on it, it's worth a lot to have a company you can reach.

OK I am not using Sharepoint so maybe this facility costs a large multiple of the plain vanilla Linux hosting price. I have sites with Easily (big name similar to 1&1) and also through my above mentioned reseller who I discovered thru MSE. The latter is working out as reliable, much cheaper and tech support that seems to include weekends while Easily cannot be contacted weekends even if server is down. It's all about big names then.

Tried 1&1, totally useless, the domain isn't actually mapped onto the Sharepoint server, just redirected, so visitors see and are asked to login to xxxxx.homesite.co.uk which looks very unprofessional. Hoping to get a refund and try another host such...
