Insurance certificate not turned up - car to collect! HELP!

Hi

I bought Privilege car insurance on Tuesday night online. The insurance certificate hasn't turned up yet. Since the post arrives here at lunchtime and I'll long be gone to work, even if it gets here tomorrow, I can't get the cert to the car dealer and he says that means he couldn't get the road tax on Friday (and I assume he can't go on a Saturday), so I can't get the car on Saturday.

The dealer says he can't get the road tax online. Is that true?

Privilege refuse to fax a copy of the cert as they say it's a legal document, but they have supposedly faxed a copy of the 'confirmation of insurance' document. Does anyone know what that is? Is it a 'cover note'? Might the post office do the tax with that? The dealer said that the post office he deals with with tax a car with a faxed cover note, but I don't know if this is the same.

Can anyone advise me?

thanks

Shona

He can't tax it online as it will be delivered to the previous keeper.

The post office require the original certificiate of insurance, they should not be accepting home printed or fax copies.

Your only option is to return home and check the post tomorrow or perhaps ask the dealer to issue a cheque for the tax and purchase it yourself on Saturday

The dealer isn't coughing up the cash - only doing it for me. Could I do it myself at the PO on the Saturday if the cert is here by then? I don't think he can do it on Sat - maybe they're too busy.
Maybe you're right - I'll just need to come home and hope it's here!
The frustration, when one is soooo looking forward to a new toy!!

Yes, you'll be fine with the new keepers supplement (the V5 slip) and the insurance certificate.

Check with the Vehicle Enquiry website that the car is taxed and you could consider the risk of driving it home tomorrow and to the post office on Saturday, if caught (unlikely) you'd get a £35 I think the fine is for failure to display but you'd have your car :)

Yes they should and do, e.g. Swiftcover. Certificate is only available online and printed out at home

    From the Post Office website:-
a valid insurance certificate or cover note - not a renewal invitation or a photocopy, facsimile, policy receipt or schedule

The certificate you get from the insurer is only a colour printout anyway, provided the one you print off/scan yourself is inline with this I don't see how anyone could differenciate?

Same thing happened to me after buying Direct Line insurance over the phone. Took out the cover the same day I agreed the deal on the car (Saturday) and the cert wasn't there by the following Saturday. So I had to wait an extra week to pick up the car. :(

Huge PITA but it happens unfortunately. :(

No Swiftcover post them out as well. Had one last year through the post from them.

Downloaded ones are not accepted to tax (unless you've fooled the Post Office with a good print quality!).

    Believe me... I tried.

Having haggled loads of car deals over the years, either my touch has gone, or things ARE different now.
Dealer claims that their cars are priced at 'internet prices' as otherwise no one will show any interest - and therefore there is no wriggle-room. Annoying but there was NO give at all. A tank of petrol was all I managed.
