Have you tried booting up without this trackball thingy connected to eliminate it from the equation.

Well they can be bought for less than £2. Will the system boot with no USB devices connected? It is possible to navigate without a mouse - not easy but possible!

    I wouldn't have a clue how to navigate without a mouse:o

I did actually look for a mouse in the supermarket while shopping, but they didn't sell them.

I should have gone to Tesco, I bet they sell them.

The system does boot with the USB things in (well the mouse works "most" of the time), but I don't think the USB ports are right.

Is there a way to check these?

Even if I get a normal mouse, if my USB ports are not working right I still won't be able to use them, will I?

You might want to try uninstalling the USB devices and let Windows auto-detect them - this can sometimes resolve problems of this type.

Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, open the USB Controllers section, right-click each device and choose Uninstall - you'll probably find that removing each controller will also remove a corresponding Root Hub - but that depends on the internal architecture.

If you then reboot, the hubs and controllers should be detected, and drivers automatically re-loaded. To reboot, you may need to use the Windows key followed by U and R if your mouse/trackball stops working.

    PC died last night.

Got home from work, switched it on, went upstairs, when I came back down there was a black screen & a strange buzzing/whining coming from it.
Speakers are switched off, but the noise is coming from inside the machine, not the speakers.

I rang the man who fixed it last time, he said he will try & retreive the stuff from hard drive I was going to put on the new "unused" external back up hard drive.

He says it might be a hard drive problem & perhaps it needs replacing - as this is the second time in less than a year this has happened. Last time it made a strange noise too.

    So I'm PCless:( :(

I tried this one before it died (the day before), sorry not to have replied.

So was it my suggestion that killed it? :D

On the face of it, it sounds as though the hard disk was gradually failing and causing the string of other problems. I've seen that cause repeated BSODs before, though I must admit I've never come across a failed hard disk that makes a buzzing/whining noise.

You can confirm for yourself If it really is a hard disk failure - you should still be able to enter the BIOS setup pages, and the machine should still work if you use a bootable CD such as a Windows installation disk or a Linux LiveCD (e.g. any recent Ubuntu CD).

If you can't do either of those then it probably isn't the hard disk that's failed.

No I'm pretty sure it wasn't your suggestion:D

I did try putting in the recovery CD, but still nothing happens just the black screen & the whinny noise.

I "think" last time when the similar thing happened, there was a noise too & I'm pretty sure that was a hard drive.

I think the hard drive is 180 GB (or something) the PC man said that would cost about £60 for the part, does that sound right?

He said if its the motherboard (????) he probably won't be able to retreive the data from "my documents".

If you don't get a post screen -black background with white writing- as soon as your pc fires up this indicates a bios or motherboard problem or a power supply prob. Is this where the noise is coming from? PSU is box with fan at top rear of pc case. Can you try and put your h/drive into another pc as a slave drive?-in order to read/recover data?
