Isn't Rock a type of cat fish or eel?

The Rock Salmon/Rock Eel that I've had from fish shops is actually dogfish - a small kind of shark - hence no bones as they are cartilaginous fish - and very yummy.

it's not the sort of cartilige like salmon where you crunch it, it's like a blade think of a flexible spatula the skate "wing" is like that and the flesh clings to it. You pull the flesh off with your fork. it's hard to describe, but skate cooked in a little butter with some capers to finish off is lovely. They call it "fishermans friend" I shan't tell you why.
You can tell me.....as my mind is boggling

Sea bass is nice and if I'm shopping in Morrisons, I point at one on the ice and ask them to fillet it for me. If you ask nicely, they will try and make sure all the bones are removed. ;)
Smoked haddock is lovely too, with most fish, I tend to run my fingers over the raw flesh to check for any bones, these can then be removed before cooking. An old pair of tweezers can be handy for this.

id second skate wings, my husband is a fisherman and when in season brings them home. im also fussy with bones and skin yuck! my husband skins them ( shop bought will be skinless) and then i run a sharp knife along the fish between the cartilidge and flesh , i do this both sides of the cartilidge, the flesh is lovely cut into bits dipped in seasoned flour and fried in a little olive oil, its ideal for the kids aswell.
One day I will live in a cabin in the woods

My fishmonger always tells me to get the tail end of fish as this has less bones in.

awwww I love huss/rock salmon but alas I think it is a southern thing, they don't seem to have it up here in the midlands - fishmonger in Morrisons said they used to stock it but no-one wanted it

Have to admit I liked it most 'cos it only had the one big bone, I don't like bones in fish either.

Am all homesick now, want a nice portion of huss and chips (WITHOUT gravy on my chips - you can take the girl out of the south but you can't take the south out of the girl :rotfl: ) or huss poached in milk with new potatoes
whoever said laughter was the best medicine has clearly never tasted wine

I would second the Dover sole or lemon sole a little cheaper .I am lucky that there is a decent wet-fish shop close to my home and the fishmonger will fillet it for me if I ask(saves me getting bits of my fingers chopped up in with the fish)My Mum always said make a friend of your butcher and your fishmonger and he will save you a fortune !!
I love sole with mushrooms and cheese sauce poured over and nice new jersey potatoes .I think I might pop round to the fish shop this morning as its Friday and see what he has in .

I know we are talking about fresh fish here and I am the same about bones. If I find one, that's it. However, if you don't mind eating tinned fish and you like kippers as I do, then go to Tesco and buy their John West or Princes tins of kippers. Personally, I like them in sunflower oil but they are in brine too. Absolutely delicious and never a bone to be found, and good for you too :j :j :j :j
