Oil running costs too high??

Hi guys,
Can I ask what your running costs are before I try too get my system checked (again)

I have a 1000L tank which cost me £505 to fill about 9 weeks ago and is now empty, the house is a pretty big 4 bed detached, open plan new build, the oil only runs the heating and water....these bills seem a ouch over the top don@t you think?

Hi, have you had your central eating on during the 9 weeks, if so this seems about right, but if not it sounds like you have a leak in the system somewhere.....oil heating is really expensive i have seen a solid fuel central heating boiler on ebay for around £2,000 new has anyone got one of these, apparently you can burn straw, wood, sawdust etc.....and i can get these for free....julie

We filled with 1000 litres beginning of February - we now have around 150 litres left. We have just run the hot water since beginning of May and hardly use any oil on just hot water (keeping hot water on constant).
We have a 5 bedroom detached house so I think your oil consumption is rather high. When we run the radiators we only run at a max temp of 21 degrees so I dont know whether you keep your house at a higher temp.

We put in 500 litres at beginning of Apr into a completely empty tank (long story) this took it to 2/5 full we used for heating and HW in Apri and early May but now just hot water - we have a 3 bed detached house with reasonable insulation. We still have 1/5 of a tank and I don't envisage having to top up again before September. This is with 2 adults and a toddler who live here. I would say your consumption/loss is much higher than I would have expected however if the tank was leaking you would more than liekly be able to smell it as it seeps into the ground. Is the lid on securely? Is there any possibility someone could have siphoned it off??

is there a leak in the pipe, perhaps underground somewhere, from the tank to the boiler. 1000 litres lasts me 16 months. [2 bed cottage].

Actually, you have lots of alternatives, such as Electricity on economy 7, heat pumps, LPG, solid fuel etc.

We have just been looking at wood pellet and wood fired systems...costly to install, take up a bit of space but a huge saving to be made in the long run. See http://www.solarthermal.co.uk/biomass.htm a hugely efficient burn and an impressive bit of kit...or so it appears anyway.
