Another benefit is that this is a VERY quiet PC

I forgot to say about that. Very true, these are amazingly quiet machines and the extra venting at the front does help with that.

When I last bought one of these it was the same in spec all but for the memory, which was 1GB in mine. I got it for £450 including delivery. This is a very good price though.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Onboard sound these days is very good, my Acer has onboard 5.1 and sounds as good as my Soundblaster card in my old machine :)
  • This seems a brilliant spec. I have just ordered and am awaiting delivery on a 5100 with 1 gig of ram, 250 gb HD AND 17" TFT FOR £500 all in. This seems a better deal with 2 gig of ram, 19" TFT but only 160 gb HD for £585 all in. Does anyone know if you can cancel an existing order if you have not received it yet? It says in the T & C that you can return an order within 7 days but at your own expense. Is there any way around this? Can I phone up and cancel and reorder this better spec?

If you ordered through the business section then I don't think the 7 day return is allowed. I tried to cancel an order with Dell the same day that I ordered it. They said I could and said it was cancelled. A couple of days later I received an email saying it was in shipping! To cut a long story short they told me I couldn't cancel because it was a business order - but after pointing out that they had already told me it was cancelled and I had made other arrangements as a result of what they had told me they agreed to cancel it.

I guess though that this is a home order. I would ring them up and tell them you want to cancel. If they won't let you then ask about the returns process. I suspect that they will either let you cancel or more likely offer you a discount on the system you have already ordered (especially if the system is in production or about to be shipped).

If you call up dell let them know first and foremost that you have an order that you'd like to REPLACE because you want to spend more money they will be more accommodating.

Let them confirm that they will do this before providing any further details of what you want to do.

Applying a little charm always goes a long way.

Be nice and they might be nice back. Also, don't just settle for your first knock-back. Try calling again at least once and re-request. You'd be amazed at how this will yield a good result.

I cancelled once with no penalties (about six months ago) so this is definitely possible unless they have changed their policy since.

I ordered a couple of PCs a few weeks ago and cancelled one of them within 10 minutes of the order and they accepted it perfectly happily.
A colleague bought a laptop last week which they then reduced in price before it shipped. I told him to cancel and reorder but they wouldn't let him so I told him to reject it when the courier arrived and tell them to take it back. He called Dell and said he was going to do this, and they agreed to refund the £55 price difference! So it could be worth being up-front, tell them you want to upgrade to the better spec machine and see what they say.

You won't need a network card as the motherboard has a network connection (RJ-45) on it. There are no AGP slots on the motherboard so you can't use your graphics card on it. There are 2 PCI slots so I guess your PCI DVB card will be fine.

Think i was right in the fact that they are withdrawing the 5100 series, today the above offer has disappeared (48hrs before it should have) and you can no longer buy a 5100, they have introduced the 5150 as its direct replacement !!!

    No real offers though :o
