A timely reminder in the UK Threat Assessment of Serious Organised Crime 2008/09

255. Although chip technology remains secure, organised criminals have adapted some early models of PIN Entry Devices (PEDs) which are used at some retail outlets. A genuine PED can be modified so that it records card information. Criminals also install cameras at the premises where modified PEDs are placed, or install key logging software in modified PEDs to capture PIN data. The card details can then be sent to countries that have not yet introduced ‘Chip & PIN’ technology where tye are fraudulently used to obtain money and goods.

That explains it! I live in Middlesex, discovered yesterday that my card must have been cloned as has not left my possession, but had 3 transactions I knew nothing about, have had just over £100 spent on national express tickets and some German Internet phone thing, so am hoping to claim it back. I started using Shell garages when tesco petrol got so expensive, but maybe I'll go back to using Tesco?!
