We did up a cottage we owned in Cornwall. We went for stripped pine. Pulling off the pine effect wall paper in the kitchen guess what we found underneath
    stripped pine.

We removed the skanky bedroom quality carpet from the kitchen and under neath was a fantastic Delabole slate floor.

A couple of lucky finds then.

There's so much damp around that part of the country, most houses are damp and there's high humidity.

There's some right bodge jobs up and down the country from all these "I can buy a house, do it up, flog it on" merchants who haven't had any advice/professionals and literally made things up as they went along. Scarey.

We have the stair wall in our hallway artexed (we didn't do it and the quote we had to plaster over it was huge, so it's another thing to add to the to do list), we did however paint it yellow!

We ripped out our downstairs avocado coloured loo in February LAST year, had it plastered, bought tiles, sink and taps which are now all sat in there in their boxes. In march this year I ripped off the hideous wallpaper in the dining room, DH did the bits of plastering that needed doing and promised it would be ready for me to paint before we went to Cyprus. We fly out on Tuesday and it's nowhere near ready. It's a relief to hear that others have their homes upside down for a long time too. All my friends and family live in immaculatley decorated homes and no matter how much I clean mine it feels filthy because of the mess. When we used to watch property programmes DH would always comment on how easy it looked and how he'd like to do it

He has promised the downstairs loo and dining room will be done by christmas - although he didn't say which one!

My last house I did a lot to: double glazing throughout (12, 6' high windows); fit new soffits/fascia/gutters/downpipes all round; paint whole of back and front with masonry paint; repair large front stone windowsill; fit boiler/13 radiators from scratch; joist fixing; de-bobble hallway; rip out two immersion heaters/water tank (installed combi); remove avocado suite, creating new large shower room and bedroom; removed loft stairs; filled in ceiling hole where loft stairs used to be; fitted new velux in roof; opened out 3 fireplaces that had been boarded up; replaster most walls; strip wallpaper from every room - emulsion throughout (twice where I had chosen the wrong colour first time round); install one new double kitchen unit; fit an additional 8 power points to kitchen; tidy up wall that hadn't been finished off (where previous owners had had units/fridge-freezer); new shower fitted over bath in main bathroom; painted over some ghastly tiles in the bathroom (were Onyx); have electrics checked and 4 days of tidy up work done; new back door; new floor to utility; Fit uPVC cladding to part of a one-storey extension; fit floor tiles to four rooms; new interior doors throughout; replace unit/top/sink in utility; pull extension bedroom back to brick and create all new walls/plaster; flashing re-fitted between main building and single storey extension; fit/supply new rear gate; demolish half the garage; create new garage wall and fit new wide remote control door to garage; install electrical wiring/panel to garage; 100 other small jobs; clear out/remove all old boarding/fit entire new boarding (ceilings/walls) to whole loft area and clean up the walls where they were covered in slate dust; fix some slates on the roof; loft planning permission; new 2-storey planning permission. And it still was nowhere near done!

Bought to fix/sell. Done up, sold again 11 months later.

He expects it to take him 3 months.
He thinks £30k to do it, then it'll be worth £150-170k.
