Bt broadband,capped or not??

I rung BT today as I am just out of contract with them for my Broadband. The lady I spoke to was very insistent that I was getting a good deal, but I think otherwise as the maximum speed I can get on my exchange is only 512kb.I'm paying £24.99 now per month which does not seem very competitive.Anyway while she was giving me her spiel we got in to a conversation about capped usage.According to her I am on a capped usage but if I went over that(not very likely)they wouldn't actually charge me because its only an indicator and not an actual limit. Now I'm confused.Does anyone know,is this capped or not???

  • Hi,

I'm on the same package as you although can get a faster connection (2mb), so I suppose it is unfortunate for you because of your exchange. Anyway, BT seem to have changed their minds about what they were doing. Did you not receive their emails about the capped/uncapped usage? First they said that we would be charged should we go over our usage, but just last week I received an email from them saying that, should I go over my limit, I will not be charged. Basically they said that, it's ok to go over your limit, however, if they find that it happens every single month & you are over it by a lot, then they will contact you & explore other options & you will have to be charged.
So basically, no if you aren't going over it every time & not by very much, you won't be charged (according to the email I got anyway!).
I reckon they realised they had to be more competitve with all the other deals out there & realised people would just switch, that's why they changed their minds so quickly! ;)

they advertise that it is a capped service - with their various limits 1gb, 15gb, 30gb (or whatever it is). I think BT will charge you if you go over your limit frequently, like a form of punishment. If they don't charge you (as this woman claims) - why doesn't everyone just move onto BT's £17.99 1gb cap? TBH i think she may have lost the plot somewhere.....

You say you are paying £24.99 for 512k - i pay £15.99 a month (including phone, £17.99 without) for unlimited 512k from zazizam (https://www.zazizam.com) - so you could just save money by moving your connection away from BT. I am downloading somewhere between 30 and 40gb a month..... so by BT's levels I would be certainly over the limit you are placed on.

    Hiya,

I'm on the same package as you, but am able to get the full 2mbps service.

I also rang BT to cancel my service when I saw what competitors were offering, but in the end BT persuaded me to stay by offering a 25% discount on my service (for as long as I stay with them).

So I pay £18.75 per month for a 2mbps service. The service was initially capped at 15GB, now most recently at 20GB, but as the other poster has said this is not strictly enforced. So if you do occasionally go over, you will not be charged any extra. Having said that, this is a HUGE allowance for the majority of users. Even if you were to browse web pages 24-7 you would be unlikely to hit a fraction of that! The activities that use up the greatest portion of the allowance would be downloading music, software and video files, etc.

Why don't you have another try at discussing your contract with BT ... if they genuinely think they will lose your custom, they will offer you the same deal as I was, plus possibly a free upgrade modem plus a month's fee free (I know 'cos this is what the operator told me came up on her screen ;) )

    HTH

Be careful of this... most provides, including BT, offer UNLIMITED services... no caps nothing... however, they sway that their "Fair Use Policy" applies, right in the wee small print.

As they say (who does?) - nothing is free in this world...

Thanks guys,Loopylou she did offer me the 25% off but to be honest I think I can get cheaper for my speed elsewhere. When I said to the BT women that I thought it was a raw deal for my speed limitations she actually told me and I quote'Everyone pays for 512kb speed,if they receive a faster speed its just a bonus and they are not actually paying for that'....huh ...yeah right!!!

I am a BT Broadband customer as well (£24.99/mth on 2GB, 15GB limit). Considered several times to move to alternative, cheaper, provider, but the hassle of changing, together with the 'unknown' of alternative service quality has made me stick with BT. (I have had their broadband for 4+ years, service quality is generally very good, helpdesk is useless but uselessness seems to be a pre-req for broadband, bank, insurance etc helpdesks these days so I only bother calling them if my blood pressure needs a serious boost, i.e. very rarely).

I don't consider myself IT-illiterate but I could never figure out where I can check my broadband usage level (same figures as BT use to determine my usage). Anybody know the answer?

  • when i spoke to bt the very nice (and honest) woman said that they currently did not have the abilility to check individuals usage, and so we wouldn't be charged if we went over!!
