AOL Broadband silver

iI have been with aol anytime dial up (£15.99) for the last 3 years and have been quite happy with them, however i am seriously considering delving it to the world of broadband and for a couple of quid more i can get aols silver broadband package, the only thing that is putting me off is that i have read about people having allsorts of problems losing their internet connection.another thing is that aol provide Mcafee security in its package, and as i,ve been happily using avg and zone alarm for my current dial up with no problems, could i continue using these. If anyone could please give me some advice or info about the aol silver broadband package I would be grateful
thanks a lot

    Hiya Jonno

I have aol gold at the mo and have done now for over a year, i'm still in the process of finding a new one at the mo as there are so many available and all a bit over my head.

But to be perfectly honest with you there are some really knowledgeable people on here that know perhaps everything there is to know about bb etc, and in their opinion aol is not one of thier recommended providers. If your happy to pay an extra couple of quid for bb, i would suggest you take a look through the other threads on bb providers as there is a mountain of info on the providers available some of which your only tied to for 1 or 3 months, a far better option in my opinion than being tied in for 12 months and find your not happy.
As far i know the aol silver is only 3 times faster than dial up and for the same money as your happy to pay you could get 512k or even 1mb for that, so i'd think carefully before signing up for aol silver. IMHO
    hope that helps.

  • thanks for some great advice rushnowt, i contacted aol the other night for some advice and they were helpful and seemed keen to get me to register, but after hearing about people losing their connections and having problems with the installation set up, its left me a bit confused,so i did,nt take it any further.
i will do as you suggest and look at some of the threads on this site
    many thanks

    Hiya Jonno,

glad i could help in my own small way, i hope you get sorted with something your happy with, like i said though they're really really good on here, sometimes it's like having your own technical adviser at home . lol I have found everyone to be really helpful and patient and only to happy to give advice when needed.

    Good luck

have run aol silver for 3 months with no problems.runs at 5 times dial up speed.there are faster out there for the money but if your happy with aol id say stick with them :)
  • Thanks for your advice heathen, nice to hear something good said about AOL (i cant understand how they get so much stick from people ) I read some of the threads about broadband and ended up totally confused, as there is so many conflicting opinions from people.
AOL have offered me a weeks trial before i tie myself up to a 12 months contract, would you say this is long enough to sort out any potential problems ?.
    cheers

I have been on AOL for years.

It drives me nuts bloated to hell loads of crap, can't get rid of it from your PC etc etc........

But they are pretty good for support.

I am on a 12 month Gold contract at £19.99 which was a great deal a year ago.

Will probably look around but might come down to better the devil you know when I come to renewal in December.

I had aol silver for about 2 years and never had any dropped signal problems at all.

I even had it working with a netgear wireless router for 2 computers without any issues.

Before that I was with aol anytime for around 2-3 years again without any problems.

The only reason that I changed was the there was a local package for broadband,tv, telephone that I could not miss.

I much prefered the aol service.

You don't need any AOL crap on your system in order to access their service and it can be removed, just Google to find out how! You pay them as your ISP but that does not mean that you have to have their nanny-wear on your system!
