Also just press the power button a few times, don't hold it down, and this will close everything for you and shut down as normal. A lot better for the PC. The hold down method shouldn't be used unless have to as explained above for those reasons. (also if things like the CD drive is being used and you cut power and cause problems also)0

Using windows run command (windows key + R) just type in shutdown, works like a treat:j
I will try this tonight.
The reason I asked this question (re Dicky2K) is that I am an impatient person and the method I use now seems slow to me i.e. click Start, then Turn off Computer, click Shutdown again in the three choices that appear, then wait....but a box appears that says "if you shut down now you may lose data etc etc, so I click Shut down Now at the bottom of the box. another box used to appear with something similar in it but that seems to have stopped.
Be-alright - see above. No trouble shutting down, just slow.
Thanks to all but some of the replies are a bit technical and it is a Dell desktop not Laptop. I believe that pressing the power button is not good for the machine. Also, which is the Hibernate button?. Sorry if I sound a little dumb but I am self taught and by asking questions of knowledgeable people like y'all I have learned a lot.0
