Blockbusters...Again....*SCREAMS*

My sister went to blockbuster 2 weeks ago and without my knowledge (or card) took out a couple of DVD's under my account. All she needed was my name and they told her my address which she confirmed.

I got a call from them 2 days ago telling me I had an outstanding DVD and can I bring it back. I was clueless as I was up north (and proved it to them) when they say it was taken out.

Long story short I figured out it was my sister and returned it. I asked to close my account as this was the second time it has happened and they refused until i paid off the £20 overdue fee. I spoke to my sister (who i dont live with) and she refused to pay. Apparently because it was my sister it is my own fault. I kindly and calmy reminded them she doesnt have an account under my name, all she had to say wa my name and they said ok and I can prove it wasnt me.

Then say if I dont pay it they will forward it to a collection agency. :mad:

you could put up a query as why they are giving out your personal details (address), to anyone who came in with a name.. VERY slack DPA by them i must say.

and if sister is playing ypou about, slap her with a couny court action, to show you mean business, andthat there are consequences to her STEALING.

That's shocking. Have you spoke to Head Office?

I had a complaint last year - much less serious than yours - and they resolved it quickly and gave me some credit on my account (without me asking).

Hopefully they'll be the same with you!

unless she's a named user on your account, she shouldn't be able to use the card. call their head office, and mention the data protection act, this is pretty slack, as the others have clearly pointed out.

sadly i worked at blockbusters about 2 years ago or something.

you need to go into that store and take her name off your account. if i can remember correctly you can add up to 4 names on one account. if she isnt on your account they are NOT allowed to let her take dvds in your name!

Just using your name and confirming the address is not enough because its against company policy (which it was when i was there).

when they bring up your account there is usually notes that the staff put on to inform other staff about anything that needs flagging up.
they can put a warning on your account that only you can use it.

i am pretty sure that they can shut down an account even if there is money owed, the main thing is that you go in and talk to the manager. They probably dont want to admit that they made a fault and gave a dvd to your sister when they are not allowed to.]

i guess the OP doesnt get on with suster- would reporting the 'theft' to police help, or cause more issues?

Like Mac says, you should go in and insist that they put a note on your account that you are the only person who can use the card. Also, you can ask them to put a password on the account.

Company policy is that only named users can access the account, if you haven't given your sister permission you should report this to head office. They can check back on the account and see that she wasn't a user.

Blockbuster do use collection agencies for outstanding money, so you need to get them to sort it out to avoid the threatening letters. I'm not suggesting you pay, but don't leave it too long before sorting it!

I would go in and pay the fine (to avoid it going to debt collectors), then inform them that you shall be taking action against their slack data protection, as it is against their policy and the data protection act to let someone else use your account.
