Pausing BT contact

I'm currently living in student halls where I had to take out a 12 month contract in October 07 for phone and broadband with BT. I'm moving out at the end of the month back home and I wanted to pause the contract till September. The first bloke at BT said it could be done then the next person I spoke to said it couldn't so I'm a tad confused. Anyone had any experience with this?
