Though, as we found when we tried to do that, no school would even speak to us about vacancies until we had an address. It's a bit of a catch22.

Wonder if I can find it again .... yes, here it is:
    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-16553063.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy
When you first get the RightMove search results (thumbnail + overview) it says "A RARE OPPORTUNITY Occupying a prime position this studio apartment ... Cardiff High School catchment ..."

Super if you like leering at schoolgirls/boys then.

Surely this is aimed at people who just want to buy an address to get their kids into a decent school. With no intention of physically moving house, they are looking for the cheapest rent with the right post code.

I went to Cardiff High School - long time ago, though.

Good point, esp for more rural areas. Although as the OP's friend is moving to Truro, they should be OK. (They might not get a space at Penair though, which would be the closest to the advert above - very popular school.)

They're only looking at primary schools and the council seemed completely unfussed about finding them a place - gave them a couple of names and told them to just write in with their new address when they had one. Admittedly the big decent un-godly primary in town is full, but the one they want seemed okay. Milestone or some such thing, just outside the city? Anyway, it's unlike in Bromley here where you have to produce your birth cert, two bills, council tax form and rental agreement before they'll give you a place.

Are they going to be forced into the godly one? That's what happened to us - our own rabid atheism not being grounds for an appeal. Although it ended up ok-ish (it had a bad ofsted at the time, but the one that came out this week is apparently either good or excellent, the school haven't sent the letter home yet), I was a bit narked, because if they had allowed us to put the children's names down when we first knew we were coming here we might well have got them into a 'better' school. The other problem we had, which they won't have, is that if they devolve decision making to individual schools as our LEA does, no schools have anyone there through the summer holiday and even once we had an address organised, we couldn't start the process because no phones were answered.

They have been lucky - it's Threemilestone and is not goddy. I can't believe that you can't appeal a schools place if you don't want your children indoctrinated. That makes me really mad. Almost as mad as I was when I found out that my friend living next door to the catholic school here had been refused a place as she and her partner are not married. Yet they're still happy to take their 'tainted by living in sin' tax money as funding, I'll bet. (Sorry, faith schools are my pet rant subject). :)

The theory is that even ordinary schools have the compulsory act of daily worship, so there's no escape from goddiness. I like to think my two were a challenge - they'd never heard of god before they started, since they started their education in NZ, where schools are completely and utterly secular. We could possibly have requested a different school for our son, as he has special needs, but they would not have contemplated anywhere else for our daughter, who was a rising five on our arrival, and therefore caught by the strict class size rules.

My school experience (60s/70s) was that goddiness was only singing 1-2 hymns at morning Assembly. Apart from that, just the vague mention of Jesus around festivals. Although, in Primary School, it'd be making an Easter card and getting the Easter story. Making Xmas Cards and being aware of Jesus/Xmas story. But it wasn't every godly. Just stories and drawing.

In Secondary School there wasn't even a daily Assembly as the Hall wasn't large enough for all 1200 pupils.

I went to all sorts of churches when I was young. Methodist as it was closer, Church of England as mum wanted us to see other churches. And even a Sunday School in an open lean-to in the garden of a keen Godly neighbour, she had all the kids from our road in there. Aged 10 I went to the Baptist church as it was closest. Mum was vaguely Methodist (in an "all churches are the same, but different" way) and dad was a non-practising Roman Catholic.

I've still go no idea what happened on all the different days. I only know Jesus was born at Xmas. But I've got an overall understanding of the names of the bank holidays, the parables and the general stories that are part of our culture so I can at least know that the name "Judas" came from the bible and was a bloke that did the dirty and that there was a last supper and a painting done of it.

What a shame - for children to be so cut off from their culture and history.

Knowing about religion is essential. Being religious isn't.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

    culture and history.
    Yes, culture and history.

Culture: why we have the festivals/days off we do.
History: how the Church of England came about, why wars were fought.

Religion has shaped the country into what it is today. That doesn't mean you have to agree with it or not, or follow it, neither does it mean you have to worship it. Just to understand that in the past decisions were made based on it. And you don't have to be interested in all that stuff, just that if reference is made to it, you know what that means. e.g. why shops might be shut on Xmas Day; why Sunday shopping has different rules.

Just culture. Why we do things the way we do them.
