Tips for coming out of an Orange contract with 7 months

I hope someone can help me.
I've been an Orange customer for a couple of years and my average bill is usually £50+. I am in month 11 of an 18 month contract.
I want to leave Orange for a couple of reasons and have been told that to do so would require me to pay the remainder of my line rental. My calculations make that: £35 x 7 months = £245!
I asked if it would be possible for me to drop to a cheaper tariff, she said it would. So I could make some savings there.
Does anyone have any experience in this or have any further advice? I fear there's very little I can do but I'm always impressed at what moneysavers know!
I know the moneysaving approach would be to stick with it until the end of the contract but I'm not willing to do that!!
