I would have liked to have had the choice to opt in rather than having to opt out when i didnt even know about it. I Didnt get the letter so i was automatically opted in.

Just had a phone call with barclays and they are talking a load of rubbish. Well done to you, I now owe you £22. Good work!

I totally agree with you, I never got the letter too, and I was automatically opted in, came back from holiday to find out that because of going over by £0.98 on my bills account, I was charged £44 (holiday was two weeks). Without the reserve I used to have a £5 buffer and was always able to budget within this.

I've now opted out of the reserve on both my accounts.
  • I had a bill come from my account yesterday, which put me -11 pounds, my pay went in today, n when i checked, i realised they had charged me 22 pounds!! it's rediculous... am i tied with this stupid letter they sent, or is there a way i could get this money back? I don't have an overdraft either, would this be worth getting?, will it work out better than this reserve thingy?

  • I have been in Bangkok since June and obviously did NOT receive the letter about the personal reserve on the Barclays accounts. I have never had an over draft and NEVER wanted one. I have had problems gettin money into my account since being out here and occasionally been close to zero on the account until payday form my job here. So ok I try the ATM ans if theres nothin in the account it gives me nothin. So I get on with my day. The cash machines dont let me check balance and I lost my card reader for a short while for internet banking... ANYWAYS.. found my card reader got on line AND.. 180 + in fees for 12 pounds of over drawn money at the cash point. I assumed my wages had gone into my account..
I called Barclays and got some arrogant !!!!! !!!.. Who basically said TUFF !!!!..
Excuse my anger .. But can anyone help ...Its really put me in the !!!!. Im broke as it is and have now had to cancel my standing orders to credit cards etc... I have now opted out over the phone to something I never even knew existed :-(

You should contact the Royal Mail, then - because we actually sent out two different mailings about it.

Again, we sent out two different mailings informing customers. The refunds policy on this is absolutely no refunds. The Personal Reserve Service is just that, a service. If you don't wish to use it, you can opt out.

Otherwise, by using it, you are opting in to a service. What does that mean? It means you can't use the unfair contract terms excuse.

And yes, you would be better off getting an agreed overdraft limit and using that.

If you have been living in Bangkok for that long, you should have sorted out alternative banking facilities, or at least had the good sense to have your mail redirected.

Banking facilities offered through UKRB (UK Retail Banking, i.e. branches) are designed for use primarily in the United Kingdom by United Kingdom residents. They are not intended for those resident in other countries or for primary use outside of the United Kingdom.

This is, unsurprisingly, pretty much the first thing covered in the Retail Customer agreement, the terms and conditions that apply to your UK current account.

Oh, and on top of all that - it was displayed on the online banking log-in page, too (on "Step 1 of 2"). It was displayed from July 25th through to August 20th, two days after the changes came into effect. So how did you miss that, as well?

Contact the Royal Mail, two mailings were sent about this. In addition, details are now provided at the bottom of all current account statements.

Notice was given online, as well. See above.

Firstly I asked for help.. This does not help me. This only tries to prove you are right. I didnt know I was going to be in Bangkok for this long or even living here. I set up internet banking before I came here to help while I was away. During this period I was not able to get online because I lost the card reader. I didnt expected to be automatically opted in for something I NEVER asked for.
The fact is...I DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT!!!..AND NOW IM IN DEBT!!! AND BARCLAYS ARE DOING NOTHING TO HELP ME!!!! THE SO CALLED "MANAGER" I SPOKE TO WAS AN ARROGANT !!!!! THAT HAS OBVIOUSLY HAD ALLOT OF CALL REGARDING THIS BULL !!!!.
    I asked for HELP!!!
  • The fact that Barclays opted everyone in automatically. Knowing that probably 50% of their "customers" are in debt, students or desperate for money who in normal circumstances wouldn't even get an overdraft show this is a SCAM!!! HOw about asking people if they want the service first..and truly how many people do u think NEVER even got the letter (S) were they sent recorded delivery!!????
Because banks are getting pulled up on their unfair charges this a mask for making MORE profit out of innocent people !!!

If I leave a car in everyone's driveway, give them the keys and send them a letter telling you that you can use it every so often if you like, it's not my fault if some of them get drunk and ram them into trees, is it? No. Personal responsibility. If you don't want to pay a £22 charge weekly, don't go over your limit.

If you don't like the concept of a Personal Reserve (which is really just Barclays making public the levels to which they're prepared to honour payments - which has always existed - and charging accordingly) then there are many banks who *won't* tell you about your unadvised limit and will charge you £30 every time you go (further?) into it.

In my case this is not relevant. But I hear what you are saying. But like no one would ever leave a car in your drive, no one should automatically opt u into an overdraft that would NEVER be offered or given to half of the people they did give it to "Irresponsible People" or HUMAN BEINGS !!

How does people being "innocent" have anything to do with this? Hello and welcome to the real world. Banks are businesses, and we have a duty to our share holders to make profit. And considering most of our ownership is actually from pension funds (such as AXA, being a major stakeholder), I'd say it was a pretty sincere duty.

This is not theft, it is business. Throwing around phrases like "innocent people" and "human beings" is a vague attempt to create an emotional response to something that does not merit one. Perhaps you are a little too attached for your own good.

As for not getting the letters - as I have said, at least two mailings were sent, and it was directly advised in all other Direct Channels Operations, such as Online Banking, Telephone Banking, statement printing etc.

And whilst I do not have to justify this to you, and I do not expect you to believe me, the actual percentage of people opting out (not just from the mailing, but since the introduction of the Personal Reserve Service on August 18th) is not even in the 20% range. I am not going to give you a definitive number because it is both company confidential and potentially market sensitive.

Whilst you might not like it, the resounding feedback given by our customers is that they appreciate a new, clearer charging structure and the ability to turn it on or off. So, welcome to the vocal majority. :)
