Get growing those lemons!

And don't throw your lemon peel away. Store it in the freezer to use in cake making, etc. Lemons will freeze well so anybody who makes marmalade regularly should stock up now before next January/February's Seville Oranges arrive in the shops because lemons are an essential ingredient in marmalade making.0

Surely, if we buy a few lemons now, juice them and then freeze the juice in ice cube trays, we can avoid running out for those things where a lemon is essential?
Do they still do those plastic lemon juice thingies? I loved them as a kid; not for the juice, but because I could use the empty 'lemon' like a water pistol! As I remember, the juice in them was fairly revolting.0 -

Blooming good herb, sorrel! There are different kinds, but the one I use (Rumex acetosa) grows faster than I can eat it and adds a zing to salad-filled sandwiches. I must try it with fish.0 -

Yep they still do them... Tesco sells them for 14p. I use them for household cleaning because their contents are, as you say, vile, but they have their place in an emergency.
I was talking to one of the staff at Ryton Organic Gardens today (it's the HDRA/Garden Organic HQ and well worth a visit if you are ever near Coventry) and she said lemon trees can take two years from flower to fruit :eek:0 -

Profit, its a horrible thing isn't it? Keeps you all in jobs.
ps, I've spell checked your message for you
You missed the punctuation and grammar, though. I won't fix it myself: people who go around doing that are such pains in the rear. Eh Poppycat?0 -

Yes, I have a friend who grows them and that's about right, so it's a bit late to start for cropping this year!0 -

I find sorrel fine for using the young leaves raw for a lemony zing in salads but when we cook it, even lightly in in stir fries, it does seem to go to a rather unedifying-looking brown slush. Does anybody have a way of cooking it which makes it look a little more presentable?0
