I'm just struggling a bit with this one as I always build my own machines and if worst comes to the worst the original install disc is available.
So I'm grateful for the help with the recovery partition thing.
  • Lets see if there is an image (wim) file is there then I will tell you what I did next. I think you said you will go round there soon but I take it that you are not able to access the problem computer now. I will keep a tab on this thread if not send me a private message when you have got the computer.

It'll probably be weekend before I can see the machine again, I'll probably fetch it home with me to fix it, always easier that way.
  • okay so lets leave it til the weekend. Message me when you have it since I have my blessed computer on almost 24/7 - the joys of being "between"!

If anyone also has this problem message me. I think this recovery option is a con by the suppliers and I took it personally that they would not supply a recovery disk so that spurred me on no end. My solution worked - maybe crudely but I am working on it! It led me onto winpe etc - great fun.

That would be good, but I can't download anything to his PC, as the internet connection has been knocked out. I'm considering putting AVG and spybot etc on a USB stick to install them, but will be unable to download latest updates.

I forgot to say as well on the above post that system restore has been turned off as well.

Install and run in the following order; the AVG antivirus, Spybot, lavasoft ad aware, spywareblaster and a great little program called CCleaner. These are all easily downloaded from the net.

use a USB stick to download from an active, virus free computer (friend maybe?) and load onto the buggy comp. run each of these and see what happens - if there is a virus the AVG should find it.

If you are able to get access to the comp properly it is a very wise idea to run the chkdsk program which will find and repair any file discrepancies on the disk.

This is easily accessed via My Computer. right click on C drive; select tools and run disk checker from there.

What else; defragment the disk if you can get it up and running. go to system tools on the accessories menu at Start button.

If you are really stuck and get no joy, for about £70 PC World will do a health check for you.

If nothing works and a reformat (god forbid) is necessary, please make sure that you load and run each of the above recommendations and carry out their checks on a weekly basis to ensure maximum performance.
:o Keep trying.........................what else is there to do? :o

I agree with your cleanup routine in principle but not with paying £70 to pcworld. Too expensive for something you could do yourself.

Not to mention they apparently don't do very much going by other people's experiences. And slightest sign of difficulty they simply reinstall.

You may like the sound of your own advice but was it necessary to post it twice?
