Interesting link. It read like an article from a grow your own magazine.
All those society ladies must be a bit worried in case this becomes fashionable and they have to do it. Mind you, they will probably just get their mexican gardeners to do it and claim the praise :D

Errr....Lotus-eater - it already IS fashionable - so I guess all these "society ladies" as you put it are a bit behind the times. Foodgrowing is the new accessory - being a "yummy mummy" is so last year:D

This post is now out of context as mine and Lotus eater's posts have been deleted. Clearly this is not a discussion thread.

I will say that I am currently sporting a "yummy mummy" apron bought for me by my environmentally aware children and we are about to tuck into a meal which comprises at least 2 home grown veg which I have been doing for years. Clearly I have to justify that I have been doing it for years as otherwise I will be dismissed for jumping on a bandwagon, though why it should matter, I know not. if the aim is to get people digging for victory, who cares why they are doing it as long as they are?

*Haribo bites her tongue and says no more as there appears to be little point if it will be deleted anyway*

I really don't think my post should have been deleted either. My comment was within the context of this thread. Anyway, for those who missed it, here it is again:

Good news 1: A farmer in Berwick has turned part of his farm over to allotments for the local community: http://www.berwick-advertiser.co.uk/news/Gardeners-urged-to-dig-in.5014597.jp It was partly from realising how little people knew about food and growing, partly from the lack of council allotments in the local area, and partly because of the economic climate and the need for farmers to diversify. I think this is wonderful and hopefully other farmers will soon follow suit.

Good news 2: The new owner of an old private allotment site near me has returned it to allotments as a 'socail investment'. He's even providing tools and seeds to help locals get started.

Ceridwen - did you see this weeks Gardeners World special? All about growing vertically (plus roof gardens/balconies) - some good ideas on there and might be worth pondering over for your small garden.... (I am certainly pondering more about vertical gardening now!)

well at least the thread is still going as the op wanted it locked..

HariboJunkie i am with you... it doesnt matter why people started growing their own fruit/veg it just great to see it... even if its just a few salad leaves in a tub out the back yard..etc..

why am now trying to grow more? because i find it very de-stressing, makes me feel contented forfilled ? plus i get better quality veg plus if done properly can save me alot of money which this year is one of my aims, to save money from my shopping bill, to be put towards buying a bigger place.. to grow more....lol...

Thanks for drawing attention to this. Gardeners World has certainly changed - for the better - since I last saw it. That programme gave a lot of food for thought. I have been thinking about putting a vertical gardening structure - akin to what they used - on a bit of my garden wall and that is certainly encouraging me to think further on this.

I was definitely lusting after that balcony with the umbrella and pond on it - what a constructive use of limited space.

Anyways - whilst that programme is still available:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00jdfjz/Gardeners_World_Specials_2009_No_Grounds_for-Gardening_design/

is the link to watch it.
