Missing MBNA statement?

As you can read from previous posts, the only safe way of overcoming these difficulties is to set up a minimum payment direct debit, thereby ensuring a trouble free cash flow into the Bank at the expense of a few dismayed customers. I acknowledge we have all agreed to make these payments, irrespective of postal disputes and missing emails, but it feels a little like being bullied into agreeing to these arrangements.
  • Hi, Interesting to see the responses since I last posted, thanks !
Having notified MBNA regarding my issue via their online e-mail facility I waited a while before checking my account online. I'd been credited my charges but there was no mention about my credit file being expunged which was my main concern as stated in my correspondance.
I then updated my hotmail e-mail address with my work e-mail address and the next time an e-mail statement was due it arrived in my work inbox! Whether this was due to MBNA doing something at their end and fixing the issue or whether there's a problem with their e-mail notifications making it past hotmail I can't say. If it's the latter I've recommened that MBNA warn clients at time of registration for e-statements. I've had no such issues with e-statements from other banks to hotmail though which might indicate it's a format issue?
Anyway, I'm now confident that their system can work, though I've set up a minimum payment direct debit just in case :-)
    Cheers, AL.

The answer is to set up a direct debit for the minimum.
My Virgin card is on a 0% balance transfer so I'm not spending on it.
They take £25 every month, not late fees, no stress. And at the end of April will clear the rest. No need to even look at the statement!
  • Hi,

As I am not resident in the UK and do not have an income going into my account there, a direct debit is not a suitable option for me. Also, given that I rarely use my credit card, until this point I've had no problem paying off as I go. If my situation was any different, I would definitely go DD though.

Anyway, to update on this. I awaited the call from MBNA last week, but it never came. I called the next day, but couldn't speak to the person with whom I'd spoken to the week before, however the person who I did speak to did try and unsuccessfully locate them for me. It transpired that they had not had time to look into the issue, even after 8 days, so the operator refunded the penalty charge and interest that had been added. I have just checked my account and confirm they really have done this.

So, despite the hassle, it has proved worth while calling them (twice).

I'm still awaiting notification of my June statement availability via email. Interesting, scotchal, that changing email addresses worked. Hotmail does have issues sometimes, but I'm surprised it would have totally blocked a message from MBNA, not even just marking it as spam. I am with Gmail personally, but your message made me think that perhaps at some stage MBNA have made some sort of change to their system and because I've not updated my address in a while (because it has not changed for years), my details may not have been transferred to any new system. I'm going to re-submit my email address, along with a separate alternative address, and see if that makes a difference next month.
  • To my surprise I received not one, but two identical emails this morning from MBNA notifying me of the availability of my online account summary. It's a shame they weren't so over-efficient when I was paperless. Maybe they are only emailing people who still receive paper bills in an effort to encourage the change to paperless, then when paperless they stop emailing in the hope you'll forget to check online and end up paying penalty fees!

Has any MoneySaver been caught out by a missing MBNA statement recently?

Last month's never arrived in the post and my "non official" online statement showed £0.00 minimum payment due. No usual email reminder either. The next day I was clobbered with a £12 late fee and my 0% forfeited.

Two phone calls later got the 0% reinstated but this apparent computer glitch and my inadvertence has cost me £12. A good way of pressurizing customers into direct debits and a nice little earner? Or do we customers have to do our own accounting and not rely on postal statements?

Where is the earner in a direct debit?

I do wish people would stop going on about Direct Debit as if it's come kind of panacea. It's almost as if "you get what you deserve if you haven't got one".

The point is, if you're on the ball with your accounting, you won't forget. You get a statement, you check it, and you pay. If you don't get a statement, then you know to query.

Yep mistakes will happen, sometimes you forget. But if you're looking to DD because you "forget", then quite possibly you will "forget" to have enough cash in your current account to cover it. Then you've got all kinds of further charges to deal with. The forums are full of moans about that - and people getting confused because a manual payment altered or didn't alter the amount of a DD that was later taken.

DD seeems to have some kind of quasi-cult status here. It's certainly popular amongst people who can't keep up with their finances or can't face their bills.

Yes, if they suit you sign up for one. I won't...!

As for the OP, my balance on MBNA has been zero for a while. I did notice that the style of my statement changed when I signed up for paperless bills. The "paperless" bills were more like the paper bills, rather than what you saw online before.

I love my DDs, and always try to persuade people to use them, but I can't argue against anything you said there.

I don't bother with paper statements anymore. My bill is usually due on the 11th of the month so I know to pay it a week or so beforehand. Do make sure I regularly check my online banking just in case something has changed etc.
