Public transport form Southampton to Poole or Bournemouth.

Hi, was hoping someone could help me please. A young mate of mine has been taken seriously ill, and is now at poole hospital. As next of kin, I am arranging to get there asap.

I will be staying at a cheap hotel in Bournemouth for the first 2 weeks, then moving to stay with a friend in Southampton, So I will need to get from Southampton to Poole, or Bournemouth as cheaply as possible. It doesn't matter if I travel from Southampton to Poole, or Southampton to Bournemouth as I will have a 7 day season ticket for the bus from Bournemouth to poole. I will need to do at least one return journey a day, Southamton to poole or bournemouth, for 7 days, and don't care how long it takes as long as it is cheap, as I am fast running out of money, Bournemouth hotels are not cheap!!!!

Thank you in advance for your help. I will need be traveling daily from Southampton, probably first week in July. Hope this makes sense, can't really think straight at the moment.

Thank, John

how about a youth hostel to stay in? Or the Hospital may be able to recommend accommodation close to the Hospital?

    Good luck

The train is probably your best bet. A 7 day ticket is £57.60 (Southampton to Poole - £50.60 to Bournemouth). Sounds a lot in one go, but it's just over £8 a trip.

You can easily walk to the hospital from Poole station in about 15 minutes or get a bus, but I think that would probably take longer.

sorry to hear about your friend.
South West Trains go from Southampton to Bournemouth and their advanced single fares are £2. You can check out their website at https://www.southwesttrains.co.uk Or national Express seems to be £6.30 ret from Southampton to Poole.
I can't help you with cheap accom though, I know there is an etap hotel that is supposed to be cheap in the centre of Southampton - within - walking distance of trains station and the coach station. i think that is £39 per night. Not sure if you could get a weekly rate. Have you tried the Travelodge £19 rooms in Bournemouth?

Thanks for the info, will look at national express now.

Anyone one know if any normal bus services operate between Southampton and Bournemouth.

    Thanks again.

I thought Wilts and Dorset operated a through service, but I can't find it. Changing at Lymington seems to be a frequent if slow option

    Right............

Having had a good play on t'internet it looks like you can do Southampton - Bournemouth for about £20 a week - but it will mean an awfully long time sitting on buses, so up to you!

The problem is the journey is across county boundaries, & largely across bus companies too! However..........it appears you can go Southampton - Lymington (http://www.wdbus.co.uk/htm/ttSouthern/S_56-56A.pdf ) and then Lymington into Bournemouth (http://www.wdbus.co.uk/htm/ttSouthern/S_X12.pdf ).

Last year the 7 day season was £20 ( http://www.wdbus.co.uk/htm/info/simplerfares.pdf - last page!) probably gone up a bit now.

Hope you manage to spend enough time with your mate.

    xx

Sorry for the delay, and thank you all for your help and advice. I am thinking national express will probably be the way to go now.

The bus service is interesting, but may take too long, thanks for checking.

On a plus note, I managed to get lots of flights with you know who from Liverpool to Dublin, then dublin to bournemouth, for just 4p return including taxes!! Good flight times too. Much cheaper than train or coach, and even with the connecting flight, much much quicker.

Thanks again all, I love this forum :) and my mate is making good, if slow, progress.

There always used to be a direct bus to southampton from bmth, it was a wilts and dorset one, it took a looooong time though, im talking a couple of hours, i caught it a few times myself. Im going back a few years though. I live in Poole which is right next to bmth, if youd like me to try and find out local deals and then i can pass them on to you if you pm me, i can give you my postcode if you need to have a local address, not strictly moral but mse anyway. I hope your friend gets better soon, thinkng of you xxx Its the red wilts and dorset buses you need, try a day rider and ask the wilts and dorset office for a ticket that will cover you for all the areas. They are based in poole bus station, not a pretty place, but i hope it saves you some money, and dont forget to take a book for the journey xxx I have £18 in my head for a week, just bear in mind that it takes a loooong time traveling, you might do better on the train, i could swear i saw a cheaper train thread on the boards tonight, good luck, i imagine the little extra youl pay for the train will be worth the less time youll spend on the bus xx
