  • Hi Bargain Addict you are on BT Option 3

BT charge you £15 a month for the priviledge :D of being on this service, plus £10.50 p a month rental. The service basically gives you free calls to 01/02 numbers 24/7,365.

If you just switched all your call traffic to https://www.call1899.com straight away you would immediately start saving money.Consider this £15 a month on 1899 would buy you 500 unlimited length calls to 01/02 numbers.Thats about 16 calls every day, are you making that number of calls?

Their is a further opportunity to reduce your bill further by putting your evening and weekend calls through a supplier that offers you them free.Martin MSE will shortly be recommending his preferred choice but until then i would leave them where they are,as one of the choices has CS issues.

I personally would keep my broadband seperate from my calls, because broadband suppliers usually want to lock you in to 12 month contracts if they combine the two.

If you do decide to go the 1899 route.Make sure you get Bt to put you on Opt 1.
    PF.
  • How do thye make their money? This is all new to me. How much would we save if we moved to 1899. Would we just pay BT line rental. Couldn't see on their site if there is a maximum call time. We are very heavy phone users (3 teenagers!) and we use the phone alot in the day, probably about 10 calls daily, sometimes more. Last bill was £101. Next one will be horrible as well as dd friends did a 0800reverse call the other day. Like a wally I accepted and will get the bill for about £2.50, plus calls to acer computers (0870). Their number on saynoto0870 was a switchboard who refuse to put you thru to customer services if its about a repair. 20mins on hold at 7.5p min,
plus 32 mins to them last week. Grrrrr.

Is there a good company that you dont have to dial a prefix number. I know we will prob forget to dial it, especially the kids? We seriously need to save money in this area so all your help is much appreciated. Thanks
  • 10 unlimited length 01/02 calls a day would cost you 30p a day!!!, so over a year that would be approx £110. Bt are charging you £180 for this facility at the moment. You will also be able to reduce this further by using a free weekend and evening supplier.Yes you would and should still keep your line rental with BT, for various reasons i want go into now.If your worried about not dialling the access code consider an Orchid dialler see sticky at top of this site page.

1899 is used by a lot of our members but you cant pay by dd only visa or debit. If you want to pay by dd consider their sister company https://www.call18866.co.uk

BT are the cheapest supplier of calls to 0870 at evenings and weekends and you can still use them just dont put the 1899 prefix in front of call.If you are going to make a lot of 0870 peak calls i can recommend a cheaper way.

If you cant be bothered with all that and as you are such a heavy user.Move your calls but not your line rental to https://www.talktalk.co.uk their equivalent to BT unlimited tariff costs just £7.99 a month instead of £15 .A saving of 47% a month, plus lots of other benefits, including nectar points if you save them :D.

Talk Talk have an offer on at the mo(It might end tonight!) where they give you the first 3 months free.So effectively in the first year you will only pay approx £6 a month for the service a saving of £9 a month compared to BT.In your case that works out cheaper then using 1899/18866.As 30p a day calls x 30 days would cost £9 a month on 1899/18866.

Steer clear of TT broadband offers ;) .

  • Thanks pricefighter, we are ging to look into it all now. :D TT sounds good so far. I really appreciate all the unlimited help and advice on this site. Wish I had known about it years ago. Could have stopped some expensive mistakes!
  • Make sure though that TalkTalk don't try to persuade you to shift your line rental to them as pricefighter says as I understand they are doing a fair amount of cold calling on people regarding this.

Also if you go with TalkTalk you can route your 0870/0845 calls through BT by pre-dialing 1280 which will be cheaper than putting it through TalkTalk.
