Either hover your mouse over the icon in the system tray (bottom right) or if you open the messenger and go to the help tab you will either see:
About Windows Messenger or About MSN Messenger
So you will know which one it is. If you refer to my previous post i listed a site that includes a download that will automatically remove windows messenger for you.0 -
thanks meclive - i did have a go at the download but norton said it was high risk and malicious script (??) so as Im sure you can understand I didnt carry on with it.0

I get the same problem Nels
I get a pop up box saying that it's been closed as I've signed on at another location.... that was cured by signing out of Windows messenger (I must've been clicking it by accident as the icon is very similar)
......and even though I've downloaded the new messenger it keeps changing to an old one that I've never seen before thus removing my picture and all my settingsJust run, run and keep on running!0 -
I thought it was just me having problems, I've not even been able to access msn since I upgradedNobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

Sounds to me like your cutting yourself off by being logged into both windows messenger and msn messenger, or your old and new version of msn messenger. Probably the best way is to:
Windows XP Home:
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK
Windows XP Professional:
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
Click Services
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK
.........................
That will turn off windows messenger.
Then go to Start --> control panel --> Add or remove programs
Find MSN Messenger on the list and click remove. Uninstall MSN
Then go and download the latest MSN from https://www.msn.com
Also change your password just incase.0 -
Its a bit simpler than all this. Its just that MSN Messanger and Windows messanger are running at the same time.
Simply click >start then >prog's then windows messenger.
(Make sure you click windows messenger not MSN messenger they are different)
In the option untick "launch at startup" and "run in background"
next time you restart everything will be fine, its that simple..0
