Yes! I wouldn't use it to clean a graze or cut though! :D

could u not just weight the ballcock down and flush to empty the pan?

You tie up the ball valve, not weigh it down. This would only empty the cistern as there's a water seal in the trap of the pan. A pair of rubber gloves, a decorating sponge and a bucket is as good a way as any of emptying it.

Ok, take it from someone who knows, wine vinegar will descale as well as any descaler and is especially good for shower heads, hot or cold. Boiled vinegar could well crack your vitreous WC pan, so pour it in cold.

Now the best kept secret. For other marks on your vitreous chinaware, perhaps caused by metal objects, the best remedy is Brasso, preferably the pads but the liquid works as well. This also works well on acrylic baths that have been scratched. I once had to wring a sodden towel into a brand new £400 toilet pan (a bit of a panic due to faulty towel rail haemorrhaging water everywhere) that I'd only just supplied and fitted and a lump of solder fell out of my towel and scratched the bottom of it! It took almost an hour of rubbing but the brasso pad got it out, nothing else would have.

Final plumber's tip, has to be ready mixed sugar soap, if you spill something on the carpet, this stuff is superb (available at DIY shops). Take it from a bloke that has dropped central heating sludge over many carpets whilst carrying radiators outside, and the punter never knew!

    Denture tablets!

This just in from the FOE newsletter:-
A couple of denture-cleaning tablets dropped into the toilet and left overnight will help keep the bowl clean. Some people swear by cola or other fizzy drinks for an extra sparkle - pour a can or more into the bowl, leave overnight, scrub, then flush.

I have a few scratches on my acrylic bath due to bathing the dog and it got scratched with the claws.

Thought there was no way to get rid of them short of installing a new bath.

    Hope this works.

    Thanks

I have come across the best ever toilet desclaer. Not very OS or environmentally sound but it is called Spirit of Salt. I can get it at my local DIY, its acid so watch out but boy its MAGIC!!!

My loo had hard rust coloured limescale buildup from when we moved in 4 years ago and I've been trying since then to remove it to no avail.

Put half a bottle of this into the toilet water, left it for a few hours and then flushed - without brushing first - and its as clean and shiny as new!!

Must say that though that now its scale free I do use OS goodies to keep it that way.

I can vouch for the Spirit of Salts for getting a SERIOUSLY manky toiilet looking good again!!! Actually I discovered it somewhere else on this site. You have to ask for it 'cos it's kept in the poisons cupboard in places like Robert Dyas etc (you can't find it on the shelf). Be careful when you use it, though, as it's pretty strong stuff.

    Denture tablets!

Hmmm, a neighbour recommended that to me a few weeks ago. Even a dozen or so tablets left overnight didn't seem to make any discernable difference though.

  • Would Brasso work on an acrylic bath that has got some rather odd yellowy stains on it. I think it is water marks, and have tried everthing else and nothing seems to shift them
