Try taking one of the smaller radiators off the wall & see what gunk (if any) comes out.

I presume they are talking lots of money for the powerflush?

    I stand corrected!

However, annual inspection or not, being unvented, it still needs notifying to building control at the point of installation and fitting by a registered person (both of which could add to the bill)..

Well, semi-corrected:D There are still some makes (like Vaillant) who insist on an annual inspection to keep the guarantee - Heatrae Sadia just 'recommend' a service, that could be done with the annual boiler service anyway. The main point is to check the safety valve, which is usually done by default when you replenish the air in the cylinder (once or twice a year).

Your choice, but for that kind of cash I would personally remove the radiators, flush them through with a hose & perhaps use one of the proprietary cleaners as a 'belt and braces' approach.

When installed, add Fernox or similar and Bob's your uncle.

I think that may be beyond us! We have about 13 radiators and with 2 small children to supervise it could all get very messy. I do trust the chap who gave us the quote though. He has been recommended by 2 people I know and lives around the corner. I'm sure if he thought that it needed doing he'd tell us, otherwise I think he would have just stuck the extra onto the quote without saying anything. I suppose it could be done at a later date?

Ask him if you could just use a cleaner additive for now - a powerflush can always be done later if it's needed.

    Mines a Heatrae Sadia unvented system and here's the blurb;
    • Internal air-gap with patented floating baffle
    • Strong, Duplex stainless steel construction
    • High performance 'coil-in-coil' heat exchanger
    • No sacrificial anode (eliminates need for annual inspection)
    • Appliance-like plastic-coated outer case
    • Patented cold water inlet diffuser minimises mixing of cold and hot water
    • Water inlet controls increase flow rates by up to 35%
    • Improved performance even at 1 bar
    • Every unit tested to 15 bar (217psi)
    • 25-year transferable cylinder guarantee
    • 5-year guarantee on the coldwater control valve
    • 2-year gurantee on all other components
    • ½" temperature and pressure relief valve
Look at no. 4 - lots of powerful showers & the house has not blown up yet:cool:

BS2870 is a standard for copper, whilst Heatrae Sadia are stainless steel & much stronger ergo an early copper one probably needs checks, newer steel ones do not.

Just a bit of fun. Warning if you don't get your un-vented water heater checked yearly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF_Wrm-Ns0I

    Enjoy
