If I move abroad do I still have to pay off my student loan?

I'm obviously not going to pay back a large sum of money if I don't have to.
i am genuinely appalled at your attitude - student loans give people the opportunity to get a degree and improve their job prospects. to then think you're too 'special' to pay it back, compared to all the other graduates paying monthly and allowing the system to continue to offer opportunities to new student is shameful, in my opinion.
the tax on what you earn pays for minor details like the police and healthcare services. go ahead and enjoy the states, where you can wave goodbye to treatment free at the point where it is administered, and pay for insurance instead. you can pay tolls on roads on a daily basis rather than higher road tax. you have to pay for it all somehow and thinking their system is so completely wonderful with no catches is naive.:happyhear0 -
Nope, I've learnt that people who genuinely want to work and earn a good living get shanked so much in this country, high petrol prices, high council tax, high VAT, scroungers on benefits, taxed on what you earn, high road tax, high insurance, inane drug laws, stupid amounts of CCTV, I could go on.
I have been visiting a friend in the states quite a few times and I much prefer the lifestyle over there and I'm obviously not going to pay back a large sum of money if I don't have to.Happy chappy0 -

The USA is one country I (and many others) would consider to be worse than the UK!
They may have cheaper taxes, petrol and burgers, but you pay through the nose for everything else. It can cost you a few years salary just for breaking your arm if you don't have medical insurance!
And then you have a nation where many seem to be so full of ego and self love, blaming any indiscrepency in life on god, and won't accept responsibilty for their own failings...
Perhaps you'll fit right in!
Of course you have to pay back your student loan.
PS - the grass isn't always greener on the other side!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Myself and my partner are in two minds about moving abroad when we graduate. I love the countryside and heritage that this country offers but feel that we really no longer live in a democracy, no longer have the right of free speech and do get taxed too much. The NHS is obviously a good thing but I do wonder how with all the money the governement is throwing at it it is not showing a great deal of improvement.
As a student nurse, my partner looks forward to under inflation payrises, under staffed wards (to the point of him being counted in the staff numbers as a student), increasingly unacheivable targets and very little respect from both patients and other members of staff. So far during his traininig he as been bitten, punched in the stomach and had a cup of tea thown over him- and told that defending himself through the restraint of the patients in question is a sackable offence unless working specifically in mental health. This type of behaviour is not tollerated in other countries where nurses are allowed to refuse care and have violent patients thrown out. Although paying for medical treatment seems a bit harsh, most employers offer it as part of their employment package in the States and it seems to have given way to a higher level of care.
But anyway back to the point of the thread... Yes you do have to pay it back and its your responsibility to pay for the payments to be converted from the foreign currency to pounds.0 -

As it is paid back in tax not sure if this could count as tax evasion - you might be back in Blighty before you know it - and I don't think the good old US of A likes it either. Their response is generally :mad::mad:!!
Sorry number one thing you should do when your a student is get a part time job. If you keep an eye on your finances now you'll be far better off whatever you decide to do when you graduate. Except tax evasion of course. There's no 'easy' option. Yes it is difficult but you reap what you sow.
Don't know about you but if I don't intend buying a round I don't join in!! I have student debts and other debts too and I'm doing it the 'easier' way and yes we discussed similar fantasies but they were just that. Well except for one lucky person...
...I've only heard of one person who has skipped paying the student loan and also skipped a visa renewal in the adopted country somewhere far off and is now an illegal with the threat of six months to a year inside before deportation with some of the most colourful characters you can imagine that would want to be illegals, presumably watching his 'free speech' - enjoy the 'easy' life!!
More importantly though...who is your guarantor that you will be dropping in the proverbial brown sticky stuff?
Do you love them?
Do check out the rest of the student boards for tips and advice though...all the best.:beer:0 -
Just read this thread. I'm appalled.
That someone should take advantage of a loan from all of us [WHERE do you, Neak, yes, YOU, think the money comes from?!] to enable them to study and advance both their own skills and, hopefully, financial ability - then have the nerve to expect those who lent the money to show thumbs up to skipping the country to avoid the debt! I'm virtually speechless -and that takes a lot, believe me. :wall:
I believe that the USA do ask you to ensure that you have no outstanding debts if you apply to emigrate. You did know that you have to APPLY to live in USA and that they might not want you, didn't you? You do know they check these things, don't you? :wall: It's not like getting on the ferry and stopping off in France and not coming home, you know .....:doh:If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0 -
i'm a student and i want to point out that "if you live abroad your student debt gets written off" is something i've heard a lot. many students do believe this (i'm not one of them)0

RE; neak 'If I move abroad do I still have to pay off my student loan?'
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
If you plan to leave the country to work abroad, you must tell the SLC who will make arrangements to collect repayments directly from you.
Unless you are planning never to return to the UK you are likely to be hit with a large demand when you do come back
Also you are acquiring interest on your loan the whole time.
I suppose the bottom line is about doing the right thing and having self-respect and personally I'd rather you paid back the money that my taxes have funded. The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane — Marcus Aurelius0 -
