If I move abroad do I still have to pay off my student loan?

Options
I'm moving abroad when I graduate and was wondering if I am legally deemed to pay back my student loan if I'm in another country?

What do people learn at university nowadays - how do dodge debt?

Yes, of course you are still liable for your debt. Do you think they would just write it off?

Nope, I've learnt that people who genuinely want to work and earn a good living get shanked so much in this country, high petrol prices, high council tax, high VAT, scroungers on benefits, taxed on what you earn, high road tax, high insurance, inane drug laws, stupid amounts of CCTV, I could go on.

I have been visiting a friend in the states quite a few times and I much prefer the lifestyle over there and I'm obviously not going to pay back a large sum of money if I don't have to.
  • dmg24 - erm no, students don;t always try to dodge the debt! I am paying my loan back bit by bit, which had grown magnificently in interest in the time I had spent abroad!

neak - there are some rules over the student loan repayments when you go abroad and it depends on a number of factors such as whether you are working abroad for a UK based company, or working for a foreign company based in the country where you are living at the time, how much holiday time you spend back in the UK 'visiting' etc. There's other rules about writing off the loan after being out of the UK and working for a continuous period of X years or something, but the rules may have changed since I looked at it a few years ago.

Check out the t&cs on the loan ifo if you still have them or give them a ring with more specific details about what your plans are re work. Bear in mind the interest accrues while you're away and if you ever come back to the UK to work, the payments will be automatically deducted with your tax from your wages!

So negative for one so young ... and of course, the US is so perfect ...

So how do you plan to live in the US? Do you have citizenship, or some extraordinary skill that is going to get you a visa?

I am sure if you have a good eating skill you can get a visa over there.

I doubt that you'll find theft more socially acceptable in the US than in the UK.

You didn't learn to look beyond your own ego then?

I doubt the states is that good tbh. Next time you go, ask your friend to tell you the whole story (warts and all) and then make you mind up.

Actually, I've a pretty poor opinion of the good ole US of A and I think that the OP sounds as if he'll fit right in!

Sounds like it only gets worse as we get older judging by the responses to the OP.

When you move abroad, you will need to inform the student loans company and you will need to pay by direct debit or similar. Your responsible for any currency conversion charges though so you'll prob end up paying more.
  • in theory they wouldn't be able to force you to pay it - but it would be goodbye blighty for the rest of your life!
