Im thinking of Zante or Kefalonia this summer. We want something central, close to beach, self catering.
Just wondered if anyone has been either place and which area and apartments they thought were good.

If you want nightlife and lots of 18-30 types then Zante.
If you want a quiet relaxed family holiday then Kefalonia.
They have purposefully tried to attract the different tourist crowdsworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
My inlaws loved Kefalonia but hated Zante. Thet are in their 60's though!0

I stayed in Fiskardo, Kefalonia last year - to be honest the people were slightly older, but I preferred that as I'm not a massive fan of children - especially when I'm on holiday, and noone tried to make 'holiday friends' with us.....I think for a relaxing, sunny holiday it's lovely. Although the vegetarian food was slightly samey.
Save me from spending...

We stayed in South Kefalonia in Lourdas beach (near Lourdata). Small coastal village. Think there was one food shop, 6 restaurants and 1 nightclub that was closed as it wasn't peak season - but was about 6 years ago and I suspect it would be more built up now. We had car hire so saw most of the island.
Argostoli is a lovely shopping town with loads of cafes. People were very friendly. Most of the towns and beaches were nice but Sami (?) and anti-Samos (?) were pebbles but lovely clear water.
Zante we stayed in Lagana. Lots of bars, lots of 18-30, lots of noise but we were about 15 minutes walk away from the main "strip" so a bit quieter. The beach is nice and sandy but no water sport because of the turtles. Zante town is nice and peaceful for shopping - not sure how busy it is in evening though. Banana beach was nice (got buses there from Lagana most days), lots of water sports there.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
Loved Kefalonia. We stayed at Xi - too far out for you - but we loved it. Spent loads of our time driving up to Fiskardo where my husband dived with the hippies at the museum. I left a little bit of my heart in Kefalonia.0

If I went back to Kefalonia, I'd probably choose Lixouri (although not sure if there is a beach there). It's a ferry ride away from Argostoli for shopping, and a fair size town with lots of outdoor cafes.
Or the Captain Corelli's town, which seemed really quiet harbour town- again not sure of a beach - can't remember what that's called
But I prefer the towns with cafes and shops to a 100% beach holiday, and staying near a town means there's most likely a bus to the beach anyway.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -

We stayed in Argassi in Zante which we realy liked ( i was in my early 20's at the time). we liked it so much we went twice in 1 year which is unusual for me! Argassi wasn't too busy but there was a nice selection of bars and restaurants, we did a few nice trips too - eg boat trip.
We hired a car the 2nd time we went and went to visit laganas which was much busier and more 18-30's ish!
Edited to add: I've heard skiathos is lovely for a quiter holiday , and is beautiful etc - but have never been there!0 -
Been a few times to northern Zante - Alykanas and Alykes, pretty good for "oldies" (I'm a young oldie honest guv), going to Kefalonia (Skala) next week for the first time.
There are a couple of "beach club" complexes at Alykanas - both are excellent, virtually on the beach, a couple of minutes from Alykanas town/village. Couple of good supermarkets and many mini-markets, decent bus service (if you are acquainted with "greek time") to Zante town and some good walking - through Alykes then turn left...0
