Lawnmower help please

My son decided to be helpful and cut the grass out the back. Trouble was, he cut through the lead! Anyhow, I didn't get angry with him as it was an accident and he was trying to help! With my lawn half cut, I was wondering what to do when I remembered that I had an old push mower of my Nans in the garage. I brought that out and my son had a great time finishing off the lawn (its only small). However, it has cut it very short! I now want to do the front grass (again very small) but I don't really want it cutting as low as the back. Is there anyway you can adjust the height it cuts? There are screws which im guessing are used to adjust the hight of the cut, but does anyone know which ones to turn and in which direction in order to raise the hight of the cut? Had a quick look on the internet but couldn't find anything. Its this one but without the grassbox http://www.oldlawnmowerclub.co.uk/moms/mom53-j2.htm

Thanks

Usually, the height of the cut is adjusted by moving the wheels/roller at the front of the machine. The lower the wheels/roller are from the body of the machine then the higher the blade is from the ground and hence the grass isn't cut so short. Unfortunately, I am unable to get your link to work, it's probably my fault (bl**dy computers). What make is the mower ?

Sorry, after I had posted I decided to have another go at your link and it worked ! With reference to the bottom picture in your link, I would say that the adjustment is made by slackening the screw in the bottom left hand corner of the picture (one on each side) and pushing the roller down. It may be number 10 in the exploded diagram above. Could you not try it in that position on a small area and see what happens ?
  • Thank you so much! Screw no 10 was the one!

I'm so glad it's fixed, you don't fancy pushing it about 150 miles down south and cutting my lawn for me do you ? :rotfl:

Now that steady_eddie has solved your mechanical mower problem you can fix your cut lead with one of these for £3 from Maplin. http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=13176&doy=9m6
You may find one even cheaper elsewhere.

Ill ask my son who thought that using an old fashioned lawnmower was 'cool!' :rotfl:

Right - now im being really thick here! You mean to say that I can join the two ends of the cut lead together with the above adapter and I can use my electric lawnmower again? (she says going off to the retrieve plug end of lead from wheelie bin and lawnmower from back of car before taking it to dump!) If this works the £3 will save me having to spend nearly £100 on a new lawnmower! I presume it is safe to use?

Where about along the lead was it cut ? If it was only a couple of metres from the end then you could disconnect the severed part and simply reconnect the almost full length. (Unless of course it's a moulded connector that you can't dismantle).
From what I've read however, I understand that you need a Ph.D. nowadays before you're allowed to mess about with electric wiring but the type of connector mentioned, I have always found to be perfectly adequate unless of course there are buckets full of water or garden ponds in the mowing vicinity which the connector may be prone to fall in.
Failing that, you could probably pick a complete new lead for a fiver or so which is better the price of a new mower.

Have a look on freecycle for some one giving away an old lawn mower or strimmer.
The cables are realy easy to change its usually twin core, and as easy as changing a plug....:D
PS.. I would get a circuit breaker if you want your lad to cut the lawn again....:rotfl:

Yes, one thing you do need to know, since you don't sound very technically minded (sorry!) is that there will be two halves to the plug, the male end with the metal bits sticking out, and the female with the bits for the metal pins to go into. You MUST put the female half of the plug on the cable that will be plugged into the wall and the other half gets wired to the lawnmower. Otherwise you'd have live electricity accessible.

I have done exactly the same with my lawnmover, never bother unplugging the new bit, it's perfectly safe. You should be able to get that plug/socket at your local electrical shop, or from B&Q type places.

My one is black, have seen them at work in different colours, black/white and of course the orange one in the picture.
