Blocking a website

Can anyone tell me how I can put a temporary block on a website? I want to control how much time my OH spends on Facebook! I want it to be a block that I can easily switch on and off so that (a) I can access it when I want to, and (b) I can ration how much time he spends on it. (He is less of a techie than I am so I am not afraid of him working out how to unblock it!)
If anyone can help I would be very grateful!

I suggest you try talking to him like an adult instead of resorting to underhand tricks.0

Just use openDNS. Look at https://www.opendns.com.
Change the DNS nembers in your router and then on your openDNS dashboard and block Facebook.
That way you can control access from anywhere in the world. It usually takes upto 3 minutes to update the servers but will effectively block the site. Also remember to block proxies otherwise they'll just bypass the block, tick the box in opendns to resolve it!0 -
If he's 18 or over, that's an online equivalent to kidnapping him.
You are a control freak and need to give him a reason to not spend so much time on there.
You can't force somebody to do what you want.0 -
Change you hosts file to look like this:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc - HOSTS
Open it with notepad.# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
to stop the block
change
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
to
#127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
By adding a "#" in front or just remove the line.
Then just tell him site must be down today

Lol this rather blunt and straight to the point reply made me chuckle! Also, it is the only solution if you don't want to cause mistrust and more hassle further down the line.
Get it all in the open and sorted sooner rather than later, or it will be worse in the longer term.John

As others have plainly said, it's not the right approach. It is not a technical problem, it's social, so solve it by social means.PigginSkint wrote: »Can anyone tell me how I can put a temporary block on a website? Otherwise, just break off the relationship now. It will have the same effect, but will be far quicker and less acrimonious. After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
