Average kWh per day - 1 bed flat

Hay All!

We have just received our electricity bill and it is over £500 for 6 months! (Not estimated!) This averages about 50 kWh per day (around £3 a day) Now I dont know what the norm is but this seems to be extraordinarily high!!!

Two of us are living in a normal 1 bed flat. We dont have a dishwasher or tumble dryer, however we do have 2 Tropical Fishtanks which are on 24/7 (I dont know if these would take up much) and a 9/10 kW shower, but other than that nothing out of the norm. We have no gas so everything is on electric but we are on econimy 7 so storage heaters and boiler are only on overnight. I will start to note the meter on a daily basis but would like to know any other advise on what I can do to find out where all the electricity is going. Also there was a electric socket connected to our meter which lead outside to the comunal garden shed. Now this was never used but it makes me wonder wether there is another socket in the flat that someone else is using? if this is the case how do I find out?

Sorry for the long post but im sure you can imagine that I am quite anxious about a £500+ electricity bill.

Thanks for any help

Taking into account everything is electric and my own experience with how mush a tropical tank costs , i would say your bill is about right

also , i would be shopping around , see if theres any better prices around

Bear in mind the avergae bill for gas and electric is around a grand a year....

IF in doubt, check it out?

Go to your local Maplins Store or check on line (http://www.maplin.co.uk)

And look out for a :-

Plug-In Mains Power and Energy Monitor Code L61AQ

    Webpage:-

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=38343&criteria=Energy%20Meter&doy=9m6

Sometims sold on Special Offer for around £10 - £15 from time to time, or have a look for on on Ebay ............. I picked one up, brand new for £4.99!!!

With one of these monitors, you simply plug in each and every one of your main appliances (one at a time) and check to see how much each item is using ............... then compare this to your meter and see if they tally?

    Hope this helps,

    SCOOBY

    NOTE

If you think someone else may be tapping in to your supply ............. switch off all your appliances at their sockest and see if your meter is still racking up the units (?) ............... if it is, hunt out the power take off and disconnect it (plus also call the police to report a theft?).

Actualy, looking at the bill again, only 6 of the kWh are during the day the other 45 kWh are over night (econymy 7) does this sound about the right amount for storage heating/boiler etc?

    Ah ............... JOBS a good'n then.:T

Could always look out for one of these Energy Monitors .......... just to help you keep a check on things?

Very easy to buy a new piece of kit, plug it in without thinking, then blowing you top when your next big bill arrives?

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

One thing ............. 45 kWh useage over night is rather HIGH? ........... UK average is arond 57% night use to 43% day use .................. on your figures of 6 Units DAY and 45 Night this is WAY OFF?

Storage Heaters .................. depends on their SIZE and what settings you have it set at?

Boiler ......? Do you mean IMMERSION HEATER???

In all honesty, it too hard for anyone else to work out YOUR useage, you'll just have to sit down and work it out from the Spec Plates on each item you have hooked up to your meter!

    Best of luck:confused:

The water heating side of your system, Blunda, needs only to be on a hour a day or every other day if well lagged.

It does seem very high, considering you are not running a TD or dishwasher. Unless you're doing an excessive amount of cooking  I used to run 2 tropical fishtanks when I had a one bed house and I never considered them that expensive to run. I know storage heaters aren't the most cheapest to run. Perhaps you just need to shop around for better prices - how much are you paying for your electric, per unit?

when we had a fishtank , with the heater , filter and light etc , it was 180 litre , i know that this increased our consumption by a fair bit

does the op cook with electric hobs ?

really the op hasnt given any clues so i dont know what help they expect:confused:

I have a one bedroom flat and study. My heating and cooking is gas, my appliances are all electric.

Fridge and freezer are on all day as is broadband modem and occasionally PC when I'm downloading something big. Other smaller appliances are two bedside clocks as my partner and I both have different alarms - so nothing really out of the ordinary.

I average about 6.5 units a day. Total cost for a quarter is £62.

I would suspect your storage heater and fishtanks are both the main culprits. Also depends on how often you use a tumbledrier and how efficient your fridge/freezer is.

40 gallon tank... well that's a fair sized tank. What size heater do you use?

Ooops, that's not Blundas tank - what size are yours blunda and how big are the heaters?

I was sent 1 of these energy monitors free in the post.

When i glanced at it this morning, it told me i had used 6kwh yesterday.

I have a 4 bed detached home, electric cooker (gas hob), tropical fishtank on 24/7, tv on about 8hrs per day, sky/dvd/stereo on 24/7 use/standby, kettle on about 6 times per day, microwave x3, the usual fridge/freezer 24/7 and washing machine once per day

Heating not required at moment (gas anyway) lights not required really at this time of year.

    50kwh per day:eek:

I would be turning off them storage heaters ;)
