Duty Free, UK to Ireland

Hi all
Could of possibly stupid questions, but I'd like to know the answers!
1. Flying from the UK to Ireland in a few days time... do you get Duty Free? I assume (hope!) you do...
2. Thinking of buying a laptop in Dixons Tax Free at the UK airport. What the heck do I do with the box? Could I carry it through customs in Ireland and then post it home from Dublin? Or should I just ditch the box in the UK, before boarding the flight?

1. Ok, is 'Tax Free' the correct terminology?
2. It's a Mac I'm after... they don't really come any cheaper online, unless you go secondhand. On the Dixons Tax Free website, the one I want is £120 cheaper...0 -
1. There is no 'Duty Free' or 'Tax Free' shopping on journeys between eu countries. (ie UK - Ireland).
2. Check the price of the laptop you want online, if it's cheaper at Dixons airside, get it there.0 -
Often you can still buy at the lower prices even when flying between EU countries. Dixons may keep it for you to collect on your return or will probably arrange (I've had that service at no extra cost) to forward to your home address on return.
Just ensure that you cannot get cheaper elsewhere as even in the “TAX FREE” shops Dixons are more expensive than you can get by shopping around. However, when they have special deals on particular items in their Tax Free shops they can often be very good prices.0 -
If it is a mac, the whole rule of, dixons is the most expensive doesn't apply... apples are the same price everywhere, I know.. i spent hours searching around to see if i could save any money...0

As indeed I have! Spent the last couple of months flicking through various websites but it's exactly the same price everywhere... then I had a brainwave about the Dixons shops in the airport... where it's effectively 17.5% off, a hefty discount.
Having looked deeper into the Dixons Tax Free website, here's what it says:
"
Our Prices
We monitor all our prices against High Street prices. Where you see 'High Street price' we are referring to the price in over 500 Currys and Currys Digital High Street stores. We check Currys Digital prices at least every 72 hours and react as quickly as possible to changing prices. We cannot guarantee to match the prices on clearance products or short term offers. Shopping at tax free prices is exclusively after security control. The tax free price is equivalent to the selling price prior to 17.5% VAT being added. Passengers travelling to a destination outside the EU may be requested to pay tax on their purchase on arrival at their destination and/or if they bring them back when returning to the UK.
Shopping at the airport
To benefit from our savings all you need to do is fly to any destination (even within the UK) from a UK airport and present your boarding card at Dixons Tax Free when you make your purchase. You'll find Dixons Tax Free in the departure lounge after security control. "0 -
I think some people are getting hung up on semantics or they are a tad confused, you can buy items in the duty free shop, assuming they have one, regardless of where your flying, however there are some issues with this.
You will only be allowed to purchase certain items for instance perfume etc however you wont be allowed to purchase tobbaco goods or alchohol, unless they have a seperate price from intra eu travellers, a point of interest is despite the perfume etc being sold at a duty free shop as such you are not getting it duty free as the items will not be leaving the EU however the shop discounts the goods to the same price as if they were leaving the EU, confusing eh, its like when tescos do vat free cd's etc in store you're still paying the vat but tescos discount to the same value.
There will be no problem with dixons tax free, if you are flying back into the same airport they will usually have a pick up point in the arrivals area when you return, again remember this item is not tax free its just discounted to make it look like it is, my experience is the prices are seldom that good and i can often find items a lot cheaper online but if you've done your research then go for it.
That blurb from dixons is nonsense by the way as i have often popped into the dixons tax free at stansted and they wont change or budge on prices, even when they are more expensive than currys/pc world etc.
all the best
