O2 - taking new phone = new contract?

My contract is now up with O2 and I am due a new phone - about a couple of months ago tho I took out a new contract with Three as it was 1000mins for £20pm (plus Nokia Slide, £60 Quidco CB and a £20 acc voucher).

This maybe a stupid question - but if I was to take the new phone from O2 does that renew my contract? Or can I take the phone, cancel my contract and sell it on ebay?

Do you really think O2 would give you a new phone for free with no strings attached? Sounds like a terrible business model to me.

Taking a new phone will renew your existing contract, adding a new minimum term to it.
