Optimal speed for economical m'way driving?

People who drive on motorways slowly to try and get the best MPG are just as dangerous, if not more so, than those who floor it..
What a stupid argument. Many lorries do not travel above 60mph. Idiots who cannot anticipate traffic conditions and see what is in front of them are the most dangerous - on a motorway you can easily at one minute be going at 70mph (or 100mph+ if you're a cvnt) and then next come up to traffic at a complete standstill. It is usual practice for people to stick their hazard lights on to warn traffic behind, but you still have to be prepared for what's in front of you, whatever happens.
Oh and don't get me started on the people who join the motorway, move straight out to the outside lane, floor it and won't budge from it, then cut straight across lanes dangerously to take the exit they want at the last possible second.0 -

why would he be?
he is complaining about the same thing as you, people who dont know how to use the motorway lanes, always pull back to the left straight after over taking.dont sit in the middle or the right hand lane....work permit granted!0 -

Suppose the counter-argument is "well I'm doing 120mph, I'm in the 'fast' lane"
Oh and I forgot to mention the people who will get inches off someone's bumper before slowing down whilst in the outside lane overtaking someone. They somehow seem to think the car in front is about to vanish especially for them, or at their command (despite any traffic going slower on the inside lane) and don't anticipate the road ahead by slowing down gradually and in good time. You don't get anywhere any faster being 2 inches from the car in front or being 40 ft.
While I appreciate that most people aren't happy to tootle along at 70mph on the motorway, the law's there for a reason unfortunately. I personally think that *before* any consideration is made to increasing the national limit, the driving test should be much harder (including motorway driving) and people should have a much better standard of driving.
I think the poor standard of driving in the UK is quite evident in people complaining about slow drivers. Such complaints simply show arrogance, ignorance and intolerance. Instead you should be anticipating the road and have a positive attitude to varying speeds of traffic, whether there be an accident ahead and the traffic suddenly comes to a standstill - or someone is choosing to drive at 56mph to save petrol money - otherwise you'll end up causing an accident one day. Remember it's up to *you* *not* to hit the car in front, otherwise *YOUR* insurance will hammer you.0 -

!!!!!! dont call it the "fast lane", you really will have the gramatically correct brigade on the case:silenced: :silenced: :silenced:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

I agree though, that faster traffic should be paying attention and shouldn't be surprised when a car pulls out round a lorry.
Personally I think the most moronic driving is the bunched up queues in middle lanes when the outside lane is clear for overtaking and the left hand lane is clear too.Happy chappy0 -

My accident was nto due to speed limits, but an idiot driver, do you really think I asked to be like this.
At the end of the day like it or not lke it or not speed limits are set for a reason, the faster the speed an inpact occurs the more likely an accident, does anyone need reminding of the poor woman who has lost her 2 children and her husband is badly injured,
Innoncent people are killed, or injured through idiots speeding, as you seem pround that you speed, I only hope the law catches up with you, then maybe if you lost your license through speeding, you would only have urself to blame.xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

Speed limits are there for a reason - mostly political. Obeying a number on a stick does not guarantee safe driving, it simply turns people into sheep, the same people are usually writing "all of a sudden" on insurance claim forms because they do know know how to look, observe, and plan ahead while driving. Your accident has nothing to do with speed limits so I was asking why you mentioned it. The accident with the footballer, its a big presumption to assume that that has anything to do with speed limits, for all we know it could have been careless driving.
Only around 2-3% of all accidents have exceeding the speed limit listed as a causing factor. Most pedestrian accidents are the fault of the pedestrian.
I'll never lose my licence through speeding. I'm sorry if that offends you but some of us know how to drive safely. Maybe you should look to your own standards before critisising those of others.0 -
In France the max speed limit is 80 mph, what makes it safe in France to do 80mph but in the UK 80mph makes you a danger and liable for prosecution?
Remember speed doesn't actually kill, the stopping bit does0 -

Ist mate to skipper of Titanic;
"Oi skip, lets get a closer view of that iceberg";)
But on a serious note we all consider ourself safe drivers, problem is in most accidents one party did nothing wrong. It does not take 2 to tango in this case.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
