There is no optimum speed in general. It varies from car to car. Also depends on slope of road etc. If your car shows MPG display, then you can check yourself at what speed you're getting highest MPG.

Remember, acceleration requires more fuel than cruising!

Honestly speaking, nowadays it seems so frustrating that most of the people are doing less than 70 mph on uncongested motorway!
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Cruise control set to 70mph - no speeding tickets (roadworks excepted) and quite a quick journey time.

You can even set it as 80 mph :) Speedo shows lower than true speed and ACPO guideline recommends no speeding ticket on motorway unless speed is over 79 mph (70 + 10% of 70 for allowance)

Excellent. By the time they're done tuning the radio, fiddling with their [STRIKE]tw[/STRIKE]satnav and now gawking at the electronic MPG display for each possible speed, they'll have crossed all the lanes* of the motorway and taken the lot of us out!!!

*unless they're already hogging the middle lane, in which case it's pot luck as to which way they'll go!

ford focus 1.6, 400 miles from glasgow to london, noted mileage, kept fuel reciepts, worked out fuel consumption at 44.4 miles per gallon. this was doing between 70,80 and occasionally 90.
around the town i usually get about 35 mpg.

on the way home was doing 80 more than 70,had aircon on for a good while at a low setting, took a longer route by about 30 miles, used up a bit more, but not much. about £5 more.

his snap decision,to go fast has left me permanetly disabled, thats at 20 miles an hr!

Speed limits are there for a reason. so next time anyone thinks its quiet late at ngt i'll hit 100 on speedo, plz think again, u might not value ur life, but other people value theres.

What has your accident got to do with speed limits? I'll go as fast as I feel is appropriate thanks.

People who drive on motorways slowly to try and get the best MPG are just as dangerous, if not more so, than those who floor it. The argument of speed over safety has been played out a million times and I doubt theres anything anyone can say that could add anything new. Speed is just a tiny factor in most accidents, limiting motorways to low speed, or even no limit as in parts of germany/parts of scandinavia makes little difference to accident figures. What could make a difference is more advanced driver training, curfew on when new drivers can drive, and how powerful their cars can be and regular 5 yearly retests. Anyone who fails, off the road, simple as.
