Reasonable mileage rate for delivery?

Selling tickets for an event next week, and am offering to deliver if reasonable distance as long as they cover my petrol expenses.

Anyone know what is a reasonable amount to charge per mile? I've got a 2 litre focus estate if that makes any difference?

Why deliver...unless they are within about 10 miles I would use Special Delivery guranteed next day by 1pm.

Even if you charged a reasonable 20p a mile SD just saves on the hassle factor.

As a self employed person, Inland Revenue allow up to 40 p per mile.
    Hope this helps

surely if you are willing to deliver only you can say how far is reasonable! how far you are willing to go! why don't you just send them special delivery?

we get paid 37p a mile here in work, which isn't enough with the current fuel costs

it costs you at least 20p a mile just in fuel, not to mention your time!

couriers here in work charge us £1 a mile for same day delivery BOTH WAYS
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

Unless you drive a gas-guzzler that does less than 12 miles per gallon it is.

    (£1 per litre = £4.54 per gallon; £4.54 / £0.37 = 12.2)
  • Auction doesn't end til Saturday pm and the event is Wednesday (we've had a last minute hitch and can't go ourselves). I've offered special delivery, but even so, if they aren't in when the postman calls that could cause problems.

I'm certainly not intending to go far to deliver, but if they live in a direction I often go in, then it won't hurt for me to put it through their door surely. I'm not going to put myself out too much!

If it doesn't suit me I'll suggest doing it another way - I've offered the option of them collecting also.

I also offered first class recorded - do you think I should remove that option?? Might that be asking for trouble?

i would suggest setting a maximum distance you are prepared to deliver in advance, then work on about 20p per mile which will cover your fuel and a bit for your trouble;).so if you set a maximum of say 10 miles then there and back is 20 miles u charge them £4 seems reasonable,if your motor does 40mpg uve made a couple of quid extra(even more if your going there anyway).

if you just want to cover costs 12p per mile should do it.

  • 40p a mile is good! Covers most expenses on cars including tyres, wear & tear on components. However, tell someone you offer this and they're more likely to come and drive to YOU, so its made easier anyway. :)

I have sometimes offered free mileage to meet part way of say 50 miles if the auction on a heavy item goes over a cerain threshold, otherwise its local collection. That a) makes it obvious you're willing to help out the bidder, and b) encourages early bids to get auction to that target you say you'll travel 50 miles for free.

Hope that helps. By the way, a diesel focus would use a lot less fuel :D;)
    Money saving:
Buy a Skoda. Laugh at the VWs who paid several grand more
Its a diesel. 50mpg - laugh at all the petrols
Its a tuned 260bhp diesel - laugh at them in the rearview mirror as they vanish

It seems that some of the answers to this thread suggest just why so few people want to switch from using their cars to public transport. :p

The real cost of driving a car is a lot more than just fuel.

OK, insurance, road tax and garaging costs are prety much the same whether you make that delivery trip or not. But the depreciation will increase, wear and tear will occur and the car will be taken that bit closer to its next service. And then there's the fuel.

If you tell me the make, model, year, mileage and driving style then I can give you an approximate £ per mile figure.
