Halifax student account - application declined

I am heading off to university in September and have had
halifax accounts of various shapes and sizes since I was about 10. Atm I'm a current account customer with an overdraft of £2,000 (which I should reduce as I don't need it) and there's an option on the website that allows me to extend that to £2,500 if I need it.
So earlier in the week I was looking online into opening my student current account, as I had completed my student housing application and that seemed to be the next logical step.
I applied for the halifax student account but for some reason my application has come back as a decline. Before I started the application it said that I didn't need to know my address for next year, but it asked me for it and wouldn't let me proceed without entering one, so I put my home address, although it seems odd that it would decline me for that.
Anyone know why I may have been declined? Do I need to remove or pay off my current overdraft before I can be accepted (I'm £15 in the red at the moment
)
Going to go into my branch sometime this week to ask about it but it seems a bit odd for me, as I have been banking with them for a long time, and the fact that a £2,500 overdraft is available to me indicates that I have a fairly good history with them.

I was declined online with Halifax last year, as I also didn't know where I was living the next year, but it was sorted out when I popped into the branch and talked with the manager.
Though the bf had problems with Halifax this year, I think he was given an account online, but they never emailed him back with his password/user name. But when he went into a branch, they said there was nothing they could do, and declined him.
Tbh, I think a history with them does help. I was banking with them for 3 years before I got my student account, and my parents both have accounts with them. When you go into the branch, take your letter from UCAS/Uni confirmation letter with you, a letter from Student Loans Company, proof of address (driving license, 3 months bank statement if you also have accounts with other banks, phone bill etc) and passport/government approved ID card.*insert witty comment here*0 -
If you have a Halifax current account you can change it to a student account.
some of the branches may tell you they cant (as are trying to sell you another account) but they can.0 -

How does this work? I have a current account with them at the moment - but i have a default on my credit file from after i opened the account (this is being challenged at the moment as teh account balance was in dispute when the default was placed there - hence me not paying in full just what i owed)
Will they credit check me again or not? scared of getting my od taken off me as i am living in it for this month and some of september
sorry to hijack your thread op!0 -
I've just been rejected online. Don't understand it, have banked with them 10yrs. Had a student account before, now have a current + savings, and no credit rating problems. All debits are paid on time.
I'm going to go in branch, but that £3000 overdraft would come in handy, as the NHS bursary is peanuts.Debts to date: A&L Loan: Paid Off!, :TMMU:Paid Off!, :T
Student Loan £10,000(+4,000 in interest)£14,000, :rotfl:
NHS Bursaries: Paid Off! :T0 -
Hi this happened to me last year, i did it online and it was refused, i went in to the bank and asked why, one of the staff said it was probably because i have no account with the bank, so i opened a current account with 100pound and tried again after a month and it was accepted with a 1000overdraft instantly, after 6months i applied for a further 1000 and it was accepted
hope this helps!!

I went into my local branch yesterday. They couldn't tell me why I'd been rejected, said the credit scoring is higher due to the big overdraft.
I got my account converted into a student account, along with all their perks. Whole process took less than 20mins. I also qualify for a credit card, but that's b/c I've banked with them so long. My overdraft still remains at £1000 but is now without interest. And can call up anytime to get it upgraded.Debts to date: A&L Loan: Paid Off!, :TMMU:Paid Off!, :T

NHS Bursaries: Paid Off! :T0
