Past it's sell by date: Tonight prog

It's on ITV1 on Friday 13th June......

"As 6.7 million tonnes of out-of-date food is thrown away in the UK every year, Jonathan Maitland takes the ultimate test by eating produce that's past its sell-by or use-buy date. He asks whether the limits set by the product labels are really protecting the consumers or simply contributing to a wasteful culture."

Should be interesting!

Could be an interesting programme. I don't take a lot f notice of the 'use by' or 'sell by' dates to be honest. If it looks ok and smells ok then its fine for me.
Years ago we didn't have dates put on things and I know food was produced differently then and that may have some bearing on it but I'd say it encourages us to throw away stuff that is actually edible and buy yet more.

Ooooooo i`ll get OH to set me a reminder for that. I have a feeling it might be one of those programs that annoy me though, i have visions on me shouting at stupid people who are scared of decent food.
    kind regards

I'll be watching with interest - like Mary I now trust my eyes and nose to tell me if food's ok if it's past its date, and my DH trusts my judgement, but DS won't even eat a yogurt that's a day past its use-by date. (so I eat them for him rather than throw them away:p )

Thanks for the info - will try to watch. Hope it convinces people to use their common sense about dates, maybe will cut down on everyhing that gets thrown.

I use my nose and eyes to tell me if food is ok or not. I plan meals around the foods that need using most and throw almost next to nothing away, ever!

However, I do think use-by dates are necessary. As a society our knowledge of food stuffs, their origin and storage is woefully poor. The vast number of 'Can I freeze?, How do I cook? Can I eat it after 2 days?' type questions that appear on this board pay testament to our declining knowledge and experience. Nose and eye may have done the trick years ago but large numbers of people wouldn't have a clue today without a date stamp

LOL at the moldy bread bit. A bit of mold never stopped us using the slice, infact, we thought it was good for us:D. It's the same as penicillin, my Grandmother told us, but then again, she also told us that if we picked our scabs off our grazed knees a bull's foot would grow in it's place...so.maybe her advice shouldn't be taken as gospel ...:rotfl:

Well yes I know my dad knows where penicillin comes from as he and I can not have the stuff. That means that he can not have mouldy cheese and throws it away due to this as he can not risk it. I can not have dairy as it is and am vegan so do not anyway.
I am intreged by the sound of the programme. When it comes to fruit and veg I really do not understand the use by or best before dates. You are going to be able to see if it's past it's best for goodness sake :rotfl: . Bread is the same. I've eaten alot of veg, fruit, bread etc that has gone past its best before date as it didn't have mould on it and was perfectly fine. When it comes to meat, eggs and dairy from supermarkets I can understand it to a point as you just do not know how long it's been sitting there otherwise. At the butchers they usually say their meat will be fine for at least a week after you buy it. Hrm it's odd I do not think many products really need best before or use by dates but that's just me I guess.
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy :D

My gran used to slice off any mould on cheese ......same with jam, any mould was scraped off and we carried on eating. I do the same myself.
