Just received this text message:

Your May 08 account statement shows 3 unclaimed rewards valued at 350GBP.Join SMSX. 2 claim txt SMSX to 80039. www.smservice.net 2SMS/mth 150p/sms txtSTOP2stop

I'm 100% certain it's a scam, I'm not going to reply to them, but I want to know who they are and how they got my mobile number? Anyone got any ideas?

No idea how they got your number. Email them and find out? Or ring them? Use 01706 221777 as the alternative to the 0871 number (from https://www.saynoto0870.com).

Even more worrying, however, is the growing trend among premium-rate companies to target people who have not given them their details. Most usually a company acquires contact details by buying lists of data from other companies. “Buying and selling of contact details is big business,” Mr Bates says. “Lists of phone numbers are passed around the industry. If your number is on one of these lists, you could receive a text about anything.”

    6th June 2008

PhonepayPlus, the regulator responsible for the premium rate and phone-paid services industry, is planning to clamp down on the black market in lists of mobile numbers in response to growing anger at text spam. Trading of such lists is thought to be a major factor behind a surge in public complaints over unsolicited text messages
they very rarely use randomly generated numbers. this is very inefficient because many of the 'random' numbers will belong to brand new sims that have never been used.
this of course instantly tells the regulator the campaign was a scam and will lead to a big fine.
