Annie-d, never heard of Salt city candles - what makes them special?

Oh the smell is SO strong you only have to have them lit for 20 minutes or so. They really are better than Yankee or Colonial. TK MaXX had a spate of selling them but now I can't find them. I contacted the company (in Salt Lake City) and of course they were not as expensive from there but the postage was colossal.

Annie-d, it is all to do with the amount of perfume you use. If you fancy making your own - buy some t-lights in metal cups, push out the wicks, melt the wax (180c) add some perfume (Candle Makers Supply, London) and pour the wax into the metal cups - wait till the wax cools a little and insert the wick and support and leave to set. You can up the perfume till you get the required strength. Ask if you need to know more. Mine of information!

Oh My Goodness!!! Thankyou so much. I have become a bit obsessed with tracking down these candles. They had names like "Christmas Morn". Do u just melt in a pan or a ban marie? ... Going to check the Candle Makers Supply

As long as you adhere to the jam thermometer and 180c you can melt in a pan. Don't walk away from it. I use an old metal coffee pot in a pan of water as its easy to pour. Wax melted as bain marie never exceeds 180C. Candle Makers Supply is a great place. I don't know if you are anywhere near London, they are behind Olympia, but its a great place. They have a catalogue and do mail order. Keep asking, I love talking about candles.

Quick tip for 'what to do with the last bits of wax at the bottom of the jar' - scrape it out whatever way you can and then bung it on the top of one of those tart melter things (I'm sure they have a proper name!!) and you get a free tart. I do this all the time and they last for ages.

I have looked at their website and although they have many perfumes what would you suggest for a Christmassy one? Cinnamon? and?

I have an infra red laser digital thermometer..would that be ok?

Great idea - I do the same too - I am always wary of recommending things to people who have no idea of how wax melts and reacts. NEVER put wax and water anywhere near each other - unless you want to repaint your celing.

God i wish i had thought of the tart thing!!!! I have thrown so many "bits" away.
I am giddy to get started with the tea light thing.....i have a million (maybe) of them and some oils ( a bit of a hippy) so i will experiment then get to work on the Christmassy idea
