saveapenny - you could just book the flights with FC and the hotel separately?

PS: its ok - I have sussed it out - I am desperate to return to SL and Mr Incapuppy has contacted you secretly to arrange a surprise for my birthday (14 Oct).

    I wish ;0)

I'm no expert, just having a quick look and found return BC flights for £1152.07 each

14th to the 28th, with BA and Jet airways.

Let me know if I'm missing the obvious!

hopes up then only to be dashed 1 post down

It was our first visit last year so we played it safe and booked a package through Kuoni. We did 1 night Mount Lavinia, 4 nights Deer Park, Giritale, 1 night Mount Lavinia and 8 nights Bentota Beach. We had package called the 'Royal Deer Park Safari' based at Deer Park and had the most incredible time.

We hope to go back later this year as we have an amazing opportunity. We are hoping to book a cheap 2 week package to Negombo and then through my work as a UK volunteer with a charitable organisation we will travel and spend about a week of that time staying at The Millennium Elephant Foundation in Kegalle, near Kandy. That will be in basic accomodation but the chance to spend a week living on site with the elephants will be a dream come true.

The only thing that concerns me (and I have no idea how valid these concerns are) is that booking a charter flight it may be more susceptible to cancellation if either bookings are down or if FC get a bit too twitchy about the security situation out there.

Have you been to SL before? The reason I'm asking is that having had a taster of the beautiful country I could never return there just to spend 2 weeks at a beach resort (but I totally respect that others would).

If its 2 weeks of beach luxury you want have you thought about the Maldives?

Sorry, I realise I'm probably talking to a travel expert so I'll shut up now :o

Btw, if you wanted some inspiration for nice places to stay that are a little off the beaten track (as far as the mass tourist industry is concerned) I recommend you check out the websites of reddottours and boutiquesrilanka ;)

If you haven't been to SL before and wanted any more info please feel free to PM me ;)

That's very sound advice. I wouldn't personally spend too long on the beach in Sri Lanka in the main resorts, get out and about with a driver and head to the tea plantations, Nurewa Eliya, Yala, Sigiriya, all very easy to organise.

I did spend a week on an amazing beach north of Trincomolee at this place http://www.tangerinehotels.com/nilavelibeach/index.htm but I'm not sure the political situation currently would allow it (you'd wake up in the morning to find a tank outside your room, and the UN playing the Red Cross in the Tennis Courts!).

    I've PM'd you anyway!

Not sure if this is a "real" sale, but as from 9am tommorrow (phone only) Virgin have a 2 for 1 sale in conjuction with The Mail ,not sure what exactly that means, whether its flights or just holidays, anyway we have been looking for BC flights too,but not sure if they would be included.I am getting desperate about where to go July (nothing like leavin it a bit too late is there!)

Last week the MOS ran a 2 for 1 offer for selected Sandals and Beaches resorts in conjunction with Virgin and Funway but iirc this was to be booked by 5th June. Will be interesting to see what this offer is.
