As important as money is, you also need to be able to have a life beyond the four walls that you live in. I think voluntary work in an area that you enjoy is a fab idea.
Good luck whotton, glad things are looking up for you xGone ... or have I?0 -
Hi Whotton, your ability to earn officially may be hampered, so why not look for a casual job which will pay cash in hand eg a paperround or babysitting?
A job for the summer would be great experience for you and get you some social interaction, but obviously you'd need to check that you wouldn't have less money coming in in total.
For volunteering, take a look at this link http://www.wearev.com/index.php0 -
Nothing to stop him getting a fulltime job from 26th June until beginning of September. Plenty of agency work about during this time.
I'm normally all in favour of people working rather than claiming benefits. However, a 16 year old who claims benefits because of being estranged from his parents is in a rather delicate situation and needs stability rather than the chaos of coming off benefits for the sake of 10 weeks work. Also, at 16, there aren't that many jobs where he can clear over £120 per week and he really mustn't put his accommodation situation at risk.
OP, if you're going into Sports Studies there'll be all sorts of activity schemes for children who'll welcome your help as well as regular placements in the leisure area. You'll need to sort these out quickly as you'll need to have a Criminla Record Check before you start. Your Connexions PA should be able to help you sort this out. Good luck again.0 -
Just to say good luck Whotton, I hope it all works out for you. I dont know the conditions but maybe an NUS card would help out a bit too? I think you can get cheapo travel and things.

once again thanks to all thos replies above..
ive started to realise when times get hard its the little things that keep you going.. and the support from you guys does mean the world
ive started looking into voluntary employment within the sports industry..
luckily with me living in durham there are some pretty good sports facilities in the area and if i manage to get my bus pass soon enough i could be working at the top end of the sports industry with physiopherapists and sport enlgand.
ive recently been in touch with a gym not far from my 6th form collage and also looked into a great sports facility near my flat
(where newcastle football team used to train) so as you might gues its pretty top of the range..
it seems now im starting to mature and get more level headed im seeing opportunities and alot of things that can help build my early career
with the support from you guys on here ive been able to get alot more settled and now that im looking for voluntary work im starting to pick bits of my confidence back up off the floor
so like i keep on saying
thanks so much.. you guys have made the difference and helped me get out of my isolation zone and work towards a brighter future..
even my mother has started to interact more and has started to try and build a little bridge.. i know i won't be moving back in, but at least its somthing
and ive also started to get more out my money.. for example
tesco shopping bill for this week.. £4.71
i out did my self:)
it seems i have alot to thank this one site for
but more importantly the great kind hearted people that use it..
it seems your all there to help not only me
but everyone.. if only the world was made up of people like you guys
thanks again

Great news whotton, especially about your mum, you sound really positive ...
Have you looked at football refereeing? It can be a really interesting area (even career!) to go into, and doesn't have to be expensive. I don't know of any clubs in your area, but where I live many semi pro clubs will even help you out with a little grant to get you started with your kit and whistle!
Keep in touch with how you are getting on xGone ... or have I?0 -
Well done for staying in school and also for carrying onto college afterwards, as someone else has said I doubt it'd have benefitted you at all to drop out and begin a working "career" doing whatever you could find.
Maybe when you're in college you might meet other people who live away from their parents and maybe you could think about house sharing? I don't know how this would affect your benefits but bills are always cheaper this way and it'd stop the isolation at home.0 -
Well done for being so positive and glad to hear that your relationship with your mum is getting better. Your relationship with your mum will take time - took nearly 20 years for me an my mum to have a reasonable relationship which is how it is now but it's better than nothing.
Just take small steps at a time. Well done on the shopping bill too.
Football refereeing sounds like a great idea. My ex did it part time with kids and loved it!! Kept him fit as well.
You sound like you're really getting yourself sorted. I wish you luck.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
Mortgage free since 20140 -
Looks like things are going well. I had a friend who was on jobseekers for ages. He started out volunteering for a few months, did really well and then got a job. He's doing so well and his confidence is up by 100000%
You'll feel so much better about yourself once you start something.0 -
A couple of things I did, when in a similar position to earn extra money.
I did glass collecting in a nightclub, it was cash in hand, I got plenty of free drinks, plus could usually find at least £20 every night, left by drunk customers.
Once my confidence was built up a bit, I signed up at a catering agency, Initially doing plate service for corporate do's and xmas work parties, got some training in Silver Service by a french waiter, and earned some good money, and some handsome tips, and got to travel a bit attending big sporting functions.
And had quite a few "perks" along the way. Its a good way to meet new people pick up new skills, and get a change of scenary.
Good luck with your journey, you sound well grounded and intelligent.0
