    What's wrong with that?

Nothing at all but you are in the minority on this thread with that outlook. Others have basically said that they've knocked on the head pretty much everything they enjoy doing and eating in order to save a few quid and that, to me, is not what life is about. I just feel sorry for them that that is all life is about to them and hope they realise what they're missing out on before it's too late.

I like to live above a 'comfortable' level and have the cash on tap to be able to do what I want when I want without having to give up everything I enjoy doing and eating to make that happen - what sort of life is that?! I'd much prefer to maintain the same lifestyle by just put in the extra hours at work instead.

I don't claim to be any expert in the matter and it is only my opinion; maybe it's me that's doing it all wrong and everyone else is right  .

I think I eat rather well thank you! I make all my meals from scratch and they are tasty and healthy. I buy organic meat and locally were possible. I'm even growing my own! Also you'll find much of the 'Value' stuff doesn't necessarily mean nasty tasting.. just cheaper (sometimes!) !! And I actually find it enjoyable saving a few pence!

So how does one grow their own meat?

    !!!!!!??!?!

There are ways and ways of saving money, and different things will suit different people. I personally couldn't bear to give up proper coffee, I like it too much. Eating less meat however makes me feel better in myself and I don't miss it.

The point about increasing earnings is a good one.

I realised long ago that if I need certain things doing it costs less to get pay someone who knows what they are doing and do some extra hours at work instead.

Academic at the moment anyway as we are so short at work I am being pushed into doing far more overtime than I would like, but it all goes into the savings so I can't complain too much.

I remember some years ago (15? 20? 25?) some car was being sold with a folding bike in the boot. Something about driving closer to work then cycling the rest. Obviously some previous oil crisis years and a marketing department trying something new.

I wanted the bike to enjoy. And I did enjoy it. I wouldn't enjoy riding the one in your link as I'd look a right plonker. And looking a right plonker isn't up there on my To Do List.

There was a 1-in-4 to get out of my town, whichever way you went. Followed by relentless up/down hills forever between 1-in-4 and 1-in-8. No flat bits. Small wheels are for flat bits.

Got to take issue with that! I've got a Brompton (which I bought VAT free on the Government's Cyclescheme) and regularly use it to climb Muswell Hill in London, one of the highest points in the capital. I would recommend the six speed rather than the three speed though. It doesn't perform much differently from a 'normal' bike to be honest - last weekend I rode mine to Reading (about 45 miles) much of it along muddy paths. As for looking like a right plonker...well, that's all subjective isn't it!

I looked into buying a Brompton when I lived in Lunnon Tahn a while back. Lovely bits of kit.

Apparently they are extremely nickable so look after it!

Ahhh! A man(?) after my own heart! I don't have a proper making machine so Blend 37 or Carte Noire is about the best off-the-shelf coffee out there. At least they smell like coffee and taste like coffee which is more than any of the others do.
