15m to walk 500m ...do you use a Zimmer? 3-4 mins to Westgate is a bit low, but 15 is too high --lets split the difference and say about 8-10mins!

Have to agree that the station isn't that close. I walk from the bus station to Nat West and it takes a good 5 mins so 15 mins would be nearer the mark.

Not sure about Kirkgate station (it's a dump aswel) but Virgin X country will leave Westgate but generally you will have to change at Leeds if not on these.

There is absolutely loads of building work going on in and around the city at the moment so just be aware.

Try the National Coal Mining Museum for a good day out (it's free) even for adults and the underground tour is great, phone them though as they are going on strike in a week or two for a couple of days. There are also alot of open space to walk round. Try Wintersett Lake, near Crofton (where i live) and there is also Pugneys Lake BUT they are about to start charging £2 per car to park at Pugneys so check and if they are drive round the industrial estate opposite and park there.

Had a lovely pub meal the other week at The Plough at Warmfield just outside Wakey near Heath common.

Have a look at the Wakefield Express for more info.

it is actually 0.5 miles, so 800m would be more precise..

and yeah... National Mining Museum is something good to see in Wakefield, just down the road from where I live..

and maybe a trip out to Newmillerdam, nice and pretty!

you also have the Sculpture Park up in West Bretton....

nope, i wouldn't. on the basis of because i live in wakefield, i never need to walk from the train station to the travelodge there..

and to be brutally honest, if someone is visiting, they probably will take a lot longer than what you think, as they may stop, or detour around to see the wonderous sights wakefield has to offer... oh.. hang on... this is wakefield we're talking about... so maybe i'll just agree with you, that to walk from the train station without my zimmer frame takes 3 minutes....

and i have to say, you are rather rude...

the sculpture park is gorgeous, i went to uni at bretton hall and the main reason i chose there was i fell in love with the surroundings.
mex millenium is a really nice reataurant, we used to go all the time ( used to love the 50% discount for students on mondays :D)
there's also a gorgeous italian reaturant called Rinaldi, it's not in the city centre but you can drive there in bout 5 mins, next to Asda

My personal preference would be to drive and park at one of the park and rides Rawcliffe bar (by Tescos) or if your in the mood for shopping as well the Designer centre both just of the A64.

The parking is free the bus costs of the top of my head £2 each. If you want to park in York itself its quite expensive about £7/8 for a couple of hours if I remember right
If you go by train although there are a few trains that go straight through to York. Usually you would go from Westgate station and change at Leeds fare the fare is about £13 each return
