Number porting - Vodafone

I have taken out a Vodafone monthly contract (18months) and wanted to use the phone for a month to get use to it before porting my number across from T-mobile. However I am now being told that because I didn't do it in the first 14 days of the contract they can not port the number across and I have to stick with the new number if I want to use the new phone.

This seems unreasonable as I want to use the same number that I have been for the past 10 years - it would be a big pain to change numbers now! They said I could cancel the contract (pay £500!) and then take a new one!

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it the same with all companies?
