Hi, this question is not really about council tax, but l think it is important. Can l charge the council administration fees for each letter l send them? is their any law that states the council has a legislation that prevents them paying administration fees to me? or any other compensation fee?

Because l have heard that anything the council does to you, you can do back to them if they owe you money for letters and time, such as calling in debt collectors to collect your money back they are due to you.

    Any adivice regarding this?

  • Hi I'm now to this site so hopefully i am posting this in right place.
My partner & myself have been trying to claim council tax benefits for last year. I spoke to the council in April 2007 who sent out pack etc we filled in forms etc then got at least 2 letters asking for more info - no probs sent that off, each time we would get a letter to say thankyou for info & then they enclosed e.g payslips etc. We then sent off the last bit of info required on the 29th may 2007 received a letter to say thankyou again all info received but then on the 4th June 07 got a letter to say we hadn't returned requested info so they were closing claim!! I got on phone to them to say how could we have not supplied the info when we had already had a letter from them dated 29th may 07??? The lady really didn't know what to say only that as a gesture of goodwill they would reopen!!! Can't put on here what my reply was!! To cut along story short the refused us benefit as our "reason" wasn't good enough - we had advised that we didn't know we could make a claim as we were not experienced to what benefits we could apply for & Citizens Advice had given us the advice to make a claim. We then asked them to look at again & phoned 2 days ago for an update only to be told that our letter hadn't been looked at! (They had had the letter since 1st Aug 07) Today I get a letter & call to say they have refused it again. My partner was selfemployed for 2 years & the 1st year went well but the 2nd was appalling with a profit of only £2051.00 & I was on maternity leave - I telephoned council in Jan last year to say we would stuggle to pay (That was before we even knew end of year profit) now in the letter i got today it says the onus is on us to ask for help & that their advisors would always sugest we apply for benefits - not so as I spoke to them on a number of occasions last year & no one person mentioned it.
Please please could someone help me with any advice I'd be grateful.
    Thanx in advance

    Hi elangar,

    Welcome to MSE.

Unfortunately, not being aware of what you are able to claim for is not a valid reason for backdating.

Sorry I can't give more positive news x
