I bought £70 worth of origins facial stuff, and with extra points for a total spend and other offers I managed to accumulate about 2000 advantage points. I was thinking of the points as an effective discount, so thought "Yay, got £70 worth of stuff for £50!". Fine.
Two weeks later I did a shop at Boots and paid with my advantage points, using almost all of them up. I thought "Yay, got £20 worth of stuff for free!". UH-UH (family fortunes noise).
Both of those statements can't be true. Either I saved £20 off the origins stuff, but didn't get the boots shopping free, Or I paid full price for the origins and got £20 of stuff in boots free. I only saved the £20 once.
Same with your example; you only get the "good deal" once - either you consider yourself to have saved 100% on the puddings and 0% on the RAC cover, or you consider yourself to have saved 75% on your RAC cover and 25% on the puddings. Is that right?! it is terribly confusing...
Exactly my thoughts!! I see this double dipping fallacy often in the Boots thread, where everyone is making the discount instantly and saying "spent X, but it cost effectively X-points" and then we read "I got ABC with my points, so got it free". Yes, it is either one or the other.

I got a 12 months free breakdown cover from Tesco, no points or clubcard involved. This is how I obtained it - After receving my Car Insurance renewal, I rang to say I no longer wanted their cover, as I had obtained a more competitive quote, so they offered me either a £50.00 Tesco giftcard or the free level 1 breakdown cover.
No Christmas puds involved at all. Clubcard vouchers being saved as we speak.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

4 x1000 points is 40.00 and so 18 bottle actually cost me 10.00
i then use the points on n.e.c. vouchers as i home educate my daughter, but i realise tht i havent got something for nothing, mr T has either helped me with cheap wine.... or helped with n.e.c gcse course fees. not both.
Don't want to be picky, but I will.
I hope you check your syntax and grammar when you're doing the educating!
Capitals, an apostrophe and Spellchecker would help!
Who uses (that much) wine in cooking?
Anyway - back to topic!0 -
My giddy aunt! Is this still going?
To my pea-sized brain, the whole blessed thing is quite simple.....
1. How much cash have you spent?
2. What products have you received?
3. Was it all good value?
Interim 'points' are a red herring.0 -
What if you don't like Christmas pudding
....:D
I do question the Boots points saving though as I only buy something there when there are extra points to be had or a supposed freebie but to get the freebie I end up buying something I really didn't need in the first place and nor do I really need the freebie. Same with the recent £5 off voucher I'll end up spending £3 on something I don't really need in the first place so spending money to save money0 -
think of all those extra pounds - on the hips rather than in the wallet0

All I know is since I have stopped buying things for points, my shopping bill has dropped right down to a much more acceptable level.0
