smsbug 2p texts for UK usage?

I'm considering signing up to smsbug - they've been recommended here before for sending texts to international destinations but I'm more interested in using it in the UK

I don't have any free texts on my current tariff so this would be handy.

It's 0.03 euro per text + a small GPRS charge of around 1 kilobyte.

Anyone used this before? I'm particularly interested in the length of time it takes to deliver a text - as it's going through GPRS and then their system I imagine there's a bit of a delay?

Cheers :)

    Hi,

Thanks for that but that service appears to be web-based only. I need to be able to use it from a mobile phone. I also need something that's reasonably fast at sending :)

I don't mind paying for texts, as long as they are fairly priced!

i just did a timed test of an sms send using SMS Bug, it took approx 28 seconds to get through, obviously the amount of time it takes will vary depending on network conditions etc. but all the times ive used it, the messages get through very quick.

you can also test it out yourself, as when you sign up you get 10 free messages to try the service out before you actually part with any money.

I have used smsbug and found no appreciable difference in the time sent to send texts once the gprs application is running.( this takes less than a minute on my old nokia 3510i) I cant always tell whether or not the text has gone, as it simply disappears from the screen. i dont have "text received" alerts enabled, as this costs extra, which is a small drawback. other than that there have been no problems .

you can check whether the texts have been delivered via their web or wap site on the SMS history page.

Cheers guys, very helpful. This sounds ideal.

I'll give it a try soon.
  • I used to use this, was quite happy with it but just recently they changed their sms routing and I had problems with sms's delivering, to the point that I'd have to go online to check that they had delivered. Would definitely check to the people who you text to to see if it does work, from emails to their tech services it seems that they struggle to ported numbers, which seems like a bit of a cop out tbh. Good luck, if it worked reliably I would use much more than I do, at the mo I only use when abroad.

With all this mostly-positive talk about smsbug recently, I thought I’d give it a go. When I tried it a few days ago, it wasn’t a complete success. I sent a test SMS to myself – from a UK number to a Czech one. The little animated envelope display accompanying the sending process stopped, and within a second a beep-beep came from the other mobile handset. The message had been delivered. “Wow, that’s impressive,” I thought. Then, a minute later… beep-beep, the message arrived for a second time. Then, five minutes later… the same message again. Then, one hour later, and five hours later.

I didn’t get charged any credits for these multiple deliveries, but it’s not the sort of thing I want to inflict on my friends. I’d set it to send delivery reports on failure. When I did get a failure on a different test, I got two SMS informing of the failure, one second apart. And there, I did get charged a credit for each.

Thanks for the report alfie - I haven't had a chance to try it myself yet.

Hopefully they will fix the errors/bugs eventually...
  • Hmm that's interesting Alfie, I've always found it pretty reliable, usually about 1 in 50 don't get through in my experience, and sometimes they can be a little slow, but in general I'm pleased with the service. You could try contacting the help team with your problems, I've contacted them before and they seem very helpful! https://www.smsbug.com/contactus.aspx
