Is there any way around single room rent reduction?

I'm 21, on IB and DLA for severe mental health problems.

I want to leave my marriage, but have no one I can stay with.

My local council would only give enough HB to cover a single room in a shared house. Due to the nature of my problems, I don't think that would work for me. I asked, but they don't take mental health problems into consideration.

Is there any way around this, or anything else I can do? Or is it just a case of trying to cope as is for 4 years?

You might have done - apologise but I can barely think straight enough to remember to eat/wash/dress so I'm not really taking in any advice :o

I thought my other thread was just people having a go at me, so I don't really want to venture back and read it

    Hi hun,

Good to hear from you - how are you getting on?

What level of DLA do you get?

Those that are under 25 and classed as 'severely disabled' qualify for the one bedroom rate. However, the information on the LHA website does not define 'severely disabled'. Thinking about other benefits, severe disability premiums usually apply to those on higher rate for the DLA care element, so I would assume (but am not sure) that this would apply here.

I only recieve low rate care and mobility.

Not really getting on very well - two emergency GP appointments, a trip to A&E and an emergency Pyschiatrist appointment this week. On temporary medication to get me through till Monday, when hopefully I can be put on something or given some sort of hope.

Sorry to hear things aren't any better. Hopefully the psych will give you something more positive to work with, and that you won't have to wait so long for help this time (for all the good the NHS does, I think it is pretty shocking at dealing with mental health problems) x

From what you have said it sounds to me like your DLA could do with being reassesed. As you need support throughout the night and the day, this would fall into the higher rate category. Do you think the mental health team would support you in reapplying?

If not, or if you can't go through the hassle of applying at the mo, it may be possible to get a Discretionary Housing Payment. You would need a letter from your psych or GP explaining why it is not suitable for you to live with other people, and then the council may be willing to see if they have funds available to pay you an additional amount.

I'm scared to get my DLA reassessed incase I loose the whole lot. Also, does needing someone to sit with me so I don't self-harm count as care? I wasn't self-harming when I applied.

I don't think my Mental Health Team would help - I don't have a CPN, OT, Care-Worker or anything like that.

I'm hoping for antidepressants or something. I can't get therapy, so its medication or nothing. 5th time lucky I hope!

They don't take into consideration self harm unless it effects you out of the home, eg. you'd walk into traffic. The rules for DLA don't fit mental health problems very well at all.

Understandable really, I know my problems are boring for other people, and it must be annoying to see me making no progress. Just suffering quite badly from brain mush.

OP, why do you think a single room wouldn't be suitable? (Serious question, not being nosey :))
