age of conan and vista

My 15 year old son has finally given up World of Warcraft and moved to Age of Conan. We bought the game, installed it, followed all the usual instructions but whenever he tries to play the screen is showing 'lag' and despite our best efforts we can't resolve it.

The computer he is using is one we bought specifically for gaming, from Cyberpower and he has had no problems with WoW or any other game, so I'm tempted to think it is an Age of Conan problem and he needs to wait for a patch. But, what do I know.... So, does anyone have any other ideas - is there a problem with lag on Age of Conan and is there a patch likely to be forthcoming? Or is there another solution? Any ideas gratefully received.

    Its most likely to do with internet connection and not the game, if the servers are busy it can take it out on the game. Is the 60% memory usage while under load or normal usage? I would suggest getting some more RAM if you intend playing high end games. Vista uses alot of system resources so it cant hurt to have some memory in reserve.

    The minimum requirements are:

    * OS: Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista
    * Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3Ghz or equivalent
    * RAM: 1GB
    * Video card: NVIDIA Geforce 6600 or ATI Radeon 9800
    * DVD-ROM: Quad-speed (4x) DVD-ROM drive
    * Hard drive space: 32GB

    Which you're just over, so you'll need to keep the detail down and the resolution at 1024x768 or less

    Graphics card and RAM is lacking you need a lot more vista likes 2GB and your running a fairly high end game. The graphics card you have is low end, its no real wonder that the PC struggles its odd that its a "gaming computer" with that card as well so im wondering if someone has been telling you porkies.

    Turn the graphics down to bare minimum and update to the latest drivers and see if that helps.

    Vista Home Basic is a tad underpowered for a games machine. Vista Ultimate would be a better choice.

    Or instead of spending £200+ on VU, use that to put some more memory and a better graphics card in the machine..
  • Of course Ultimate is better. However with the lack RAM already a problem it would just drain more precious recesources. After upgrading the RAM, which does not cost that much any more, you may wish to upgrade to Home Premium at some point. There are extra features (Backup and restore, media center) that may be worth the extra £53.

    How is Vista Basic underpowered for a games machine? The OS is pretty much irrelevant, in fact you could argue Basic is better as the OS uses less system resources than the premium versions thus leaving more for the game.

    Personally I would upgrade your RAM to 2Gb and then think about a graphics card.

    Is it only lagging online or is it all the time? The best bet as others have said is to adjust your video settings. I would turn them down to minimum then gradually up the various settings until you reach a balance between playability and looks.

    This are the recommended specs by the way

    Recommended
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz (E6600) or better
    Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7950GX2 or better
    RAM: 2GB or more

    So both your RAM and Graphics card are below the recommended specsand the processor is borderline.

    As other's have said it's the computer that is underpowered, not the OS.

    Up the RAM and the graphics card to start with.

    Throwing more hardware at the problem may not solve it. A further alternative would be to install XP instead, as many have done, having tried Vista.

    Don't forget it is a fairy new game. Are you the only one experiencing lag? If so its likely to be you.

    How are you connecting to the network/interenet? Wired or wirelessly?

    1GB RAM in vista is going to struggle. I used 1.09GB just for my basic stuff (I do usually have a lot of things running though).
    It could be the gfx but I am more inclined for it being the RAM.
